405 gr 458 plain base lee boolit over 14 gr of unique. I've had good luck to 100 yards with light recoil out of an 1895 Marlin. Has anyone else found a favorite cat sneeze load for this cartridge?

I use a Rapine 270 gr bullet over 8 gr Bullseye for 1050 fps out of my TDs. A similar load with any cast bullet of 250 - 300 gr is excellent.

I also use 6.5 gr of Bullseye under a Rapine 210 gr HB.

How was the accuracy?

I have been playing with the 457191 with about 8 grains of red dot and a tuft of dacron...still have not perfected the exact charge, but it makes my 17 inch contender into a large capgun.

385 grain cast over 10 grains of Unique. About 1050 FPS. No filler required. Great accuracy.

I use the same load. A Lee 457-405-F that drops out of the mold at .459 over 14gr of Unique. It is extremely accurate .

For plinking why not go with a round ball? Small powder charge and easy on lead supply.

I’ve only played with round balls a little but I never could get anything close to the same level of accuracy that I could get with the Lyman 457124 385 grain over 10 grains of Unique. This load shoots well out to 300 yards.

Same here with the 405. Way more accurate than a round ball.

Round ball equals fliers, at least in my experience. I have a SC 454-424 that casts a hair over .457 that I have shot a lot out of my Marlin CB. Off the top of my head, I don't recall the load info, though 14 grains of Unique comes to mind. I used it on silhouette chickens.

at 300gr over 1000fps, I'd use that for hunting small does from a stand over bait... 30 yd shots!

wouldn't attract too much attention, or scare other game.

I have one of the Lee 6 caivty "collar button" moulds from several years back. That bullet over 8-10 grains of Unique is a lot of fun.

How much do those weigh and how is the accuracy Doc?

Mine end up about 150 grains with lube. I run then through the lube/sizer with the .459 die. As for accuracy, I generally can hit what I am aiming at (dirt clods and neredowell rocks) out to about 50 yards. I have not bench rested the load (I use these in my Guide Gun and a Ruger No. 1) so I can't say much except they are a bundle of fun. No loaded rounds generally left in the box on the way home. If I think about it I will set up a target and do a proper group one of these days. Sorry I am not much assistance in that regard.
