Has anyone on here ever done much with cast bullets and the 7MM Mag and how did it work out for you. I bought a used Savage 110 in 7MM mag , I also have a Lyman 7MM 160 grain mold I use with a 7 X 57 Mauser. In my cast books I have found loads for both Red-Dot and unique powder for the Magnum. I am just looking for a mild plinking load but a little concerned about such a light load in a magnum case. I think Lyman NO# 2 alloy should be hard enough. I will most likely start out with a GC. I also believe with the large case volume and small amount of powder A Magnum LR primer would also be wise. Your thoughts on this.
Thanks

Here is 2 loads for the 7mm rem mag. both using the RCBS 145 gr gc SIL boolet , std primer & no case filler.
14.0 grs of red dot @1,603 fps. 1.50" @ 100 yards

17.0 grs of H-4227 @1,510 fps . 1.50" @ 100 yards

Yup, this comes up from time to time. Looking back, the time spent looking for a good load could have been better used doing something more productive. The 7 mag is a huge case with a short neck, and most of the 7 mag rifles I have ever seen are tighter than a 10 twist. These are not the most ideal conditions for finding a good cast load. BUT!, it can be done. I did (years ago), just to say I could. Seems like I wound up with the RCBS 168 over IMR 3031 as my best load. If I were going to get interested in 7mm loads, I think I would be more apt to go to the 7x57 with a 12 or 14 twist.

Thank you
I do load the 7 X 57 with the Lyman 287641 It shoot surprisingly well. I also shoot the Lyman 311291 in a Marlin 336, and the RCBS 30-180 in 308 and 30.06 For plinking. I use Red-Dot in all these loads it’s cheap as powders go. The 7MM Mag is new to me and felt I should ask some questions before I loaded any up.

Yep, Corky, we need to get us a bolt something in 277 or 284 for target-fun cast. Something case size to shoot 110-130 grainers at 2400 fps max. Case size somewhere around 6.8 military or just a smite larger, eh? Stock 30-30? ... felix

With the large capacity case I would use Trailboss; I have used it in my Rem 700 MTN in 300 Wby with 200 gr RN's they are about 1,800 fps and have always shot under 3" at 170 yds, with most groups closer to 2". Very pleasent load to shoot.
