The ease of forming will depend on the head space on your particular rifle. And, yes, they vary from rifle to rifle even in the same brand. Some have a tighter head space and will require thinning of the rims. Others will work with 45-70 rims unaltered. Mine (Uberti) had a head space of .060" (would just barely close) so I trimmed the cases to .058". If you don't have to trim, forming is a breeze. If you do have to trim, it is a pain in the rear.

I make my 45-60's from both R-P and Winchester brass by cutting the case on a little chop saw to near proper length, then finish trimming with the Forster case trimmer to 1.89". BTW the cases load very nicely with minimal neck sizing in a Lyman 310 tool 45-70 set. I use .452" diameter bullets. Check some of the cowboy forums as some of the initial "76s" brought in apparently had rim dimension problems but I hesitate to name the culprits at this point. I shoot a Uberti highwall initially made in 45 Colt, just rechambered to 45-60. BvT
