Not sure were to post this, but it is a question...

Has there ever been a handgun round--Contender--based on the 30-30 cartridge as the parent and ending up a 0.277 caliber...

I'm sure I have read of them years ago, but can't seem to remember the name of it...

Guess it could be similar to the 7-30 Waters but in 0.277" caliber...

Thanks...BCB

the 6.8 spc is a 277 cartridge based on the 30 remington, which is nothing more than a rimless 30-30. I have no doubt there is a 277 caliber 30-30 wildcat that has been done, but I don't know of one.

That one I own...

I was just curious on a rimmed version of that one...

Bullberry, the custom encore/contender barrel company, had a line of necked down 30-30 cartridges at one time (6mm, 25, 6.5, etc). I am not sure if that ever included .27.

I'm sure it has been done. I honestly cannot think of any cartridge that has not been covered by a wildcat somewhere. It has not been done enough to get picked up by the general shooting public, but yes it has been made. My personal feeling is, if you want to use the 30-30 case, I'd opt to use the 7-30 Waters as a starting place. Neck that down to .270, that way you have both the increased case capacity and a wonderful starting place for load development.

The 30-30 has been wildcatted down to 22 and up to 35 calibers. PO Ackley's Cartridges would give some good info. IIRC, he did not care for bullets designed for 270 in the 30wcf case.

270 JDJ based on 225 WIN. Pretty much the same as a 30-30.

I believe Bellm will take a 6.8 chamber and cut a rim making it a 6.8x30-30, or even with an improved version. 6.8x30-30AI !!

Problems were of course, the construction of 270 bullets for hunting that needs a higher velocity. I have the 7R in a 10" barrel Wichita, 30-30 necked to 7mm. Shot a few deer but it needs the SSP, 120 gr for any expansion, the 139 too tough, had to walk circles to find deer, no blood trails.
For target the 270 would be fine and very accurate.
