View Full Version : Who is fooling with the 9.3x74R with cast?

A friend has a 9.3X74R Double Rifle, a Chapuis UGEX and wants to shoot cast in it. He has obtained a 286 grain FPGC Mountain Mould which drops bullets at .368 with WW alloy.

Anybody got load data, something suitable for deer or boar using 4895, 4064, Varget, RL15 would be nice. Based on what I've used in the .375 H&H, I was thinking about 50-55 grains of the above powders should work as a starting load, but that's only a guess.

He is concerned about barrel regulation, so wants something close to a full power load, no "mouse fart" stuff.

Suggestions? Discussion?

I got in on a group buy for a mould for my Chapuis hoping to come up with a load that would work for practice, but unfortunately the gas checks, intended for .375 bullets, were too big and too stiff so the loaded rounds were too large to fit the tight chambers of my rifle. Perhaps someday I'll find a way to make it work, but for now I've given up on it.

Some of the guys on the "Accurate Reloading" site have been shooting cast in their rifles and apparently have achieved reasonable regulation using what they term the 70% rule. I believe they are using 70% of the regular powder charge, but I haven't followed up on that due to the above problem.

Good luck to your friend, I'd be interested in any good loads he may come up with. Maybe that will get me interested again in shooting cast in my rifle.

Elk Hunter, Blammer has 9.3 gas checks I tried them this week they fit very nice, should sort your problem out, Robert.

Outpost75,
I have a Blaser K95 single shot in 9.3X74R and have had good luck using NEI's 283 gr. RN over H4895..
Started with 36 grs. and worked up to 47 grs. one gr. at a time..
I was able to get sub MOA 3 shot groups to 1.5 MOA groups with all loads at 100m up to 46grs. with 44grs. being the most consistent..
I didn't go beyond 47grs..
Didn't chrony..

Was using WLR primers, ACWW, sized .368" and lubed with Bullshops Speed Green..
Used Hornady .375" gas checks but only after I enlarged the gc shank to retain them..
This was before Blammers 9.3 gc's..

Also PP'd some NOE 358318's and they shot well enough that I will will be doing some more load work up on them..
Be aware I haven't got a clue where I got the H4895 load data as it is not in my 3 ring binder collection of 9.3 data..
I may have extrapolated from 9.3X62 data..
I'll look tomorrow to see if I can find it and get back to you..

BTW that same bullet and H4895 worked great on my CZ 550FS 9.3X62..
Heck that rifle is a cast bullet shooting fool..

Ok just looking at Hodgdons 9.3X62 data now I see that the max load using a 286gr bullet and H4895 is 55.5grs with and staring load of 51 grs..
My load of 44 grs must be kind of wimpy..
Sorry..

Been thinking about a 9.3x62...but lack of GC was a turn-off. Blammer saves the day ! I just might have to get a 9.3 now.

Yep, usually have a bunch of 9.3's in stock.

send me questions through the blammersboard if you have questions on the gc's. I get them quickly through that method.

Also, PatMarlin makes "checkmakers" for 9.3. I have one and it makes beautiful gas checks from .008" copper shimstock.
