Greetings
Have been in contact with a feller who is accumulating 1892 Winchester info to write a book. He was interested in those 1892's that have popped up down here in Peru. Through the course of our correspondence it turns out there was a minor segment of 1892 production when Winchester produced a group of rifles and SRC's with a unique upper tang style. About 20 some thousand were produced starting about 490,xxx where the upper tang just behind the hammer slot were marked perpendicular to the other tang info "MOD" (then below) "1892". See photo below. Sadly my 1892 SRC 44 WCF (509xxx) was roughly buffed and reblued before I could rescue it. Please note I am not dating or trying to establish any Winchester data. Rough parameters is all.

*** Scroll down to posts #4 and 5 which Reverand Al added for better data and photo.

So I am wondering.. Anyone else out there have one ? Not that this makes it rare or extra valuable.. just somewhat unique and interesting. Should someone have one of these 1892's and a good camara why not post a better photo than mine.

If you have a copy of the Madis Winchester book and have a look through the '92 section you'll find that there were some guns marked this way for export (primarily to Britain) in about 1911 to 1912 from memory (?). I have one of those guns in a '92 SRC too and it has the same roll stamp on the tang as yours just below the hammer. When I get a chance I'll dig the gun out and post a photo of the stamping. Mine was one of that group of guns, but was never shipped to England as there are no British proofs on my carbine. Apparently English Customs wouldn't accept the factory abbreviated "92 Winchester" stamp on the tang and insisted that they be stamped with the full model designation of "Model 1892" in addition to the normal tang stamping before they could be imported. Does your carbine have any British proofs on the barrel and action showing that it was originally shipped to England and then made it's way to South America? Just curious.
I'll post more info with my photos when I can get to it ...

Howdy Reverend AL
Sadly mine was buffed by a gorilla I think. The serial # is barely visible and the caliber is hard to read also. If there were any marks they were erased by the buffer. Have to pull the hand guard again and see what might be hiding under there. It has been a couple years since that was off.

I went digging and found my Madis Winchester book and on page 377 there is a photo example of one of these guns and it states: "Guns which were intended for export, especially to Britain and her colonies, were marked as shown here for a short time. British import regulations required the year of introduction to be marked on the gun. Model 92's with this marking will rarely be found. The serial number of this carbine (in the photo) is 483312; most of the models 92 with this marking were made in 1908 and 1909, in the serial number range from 437,920 to 522,162. Not all guns in this series were marked in this way; only those intended for export have the marking."
OK ... now for the bigger job of trying find out which of my 5 gun safes my example of this model of '92 carbine is in and I'll post a photo for you when I find it! (Mine is a standard '92 SRC in .44 WCF ...)

Here you go Mike ... (and I guess I should go buy some lottery tickets since this gun I was looking for was in the first gun safe I opened!) Anyway, here are some photos of my similarly marked "Mod. 1892" SRC ...
