I am trying to take a barrel off a action that appears to be tighter than a bulls rear end going up hill full of water! So I am using Goodsteels soak em method and maybe I will turn off the barrel shoulder before I try again. In a week I will report on my progress. ( the last mauser barrel I popped loose made me want to never do it again and now this!)

Ya need a real barrel vise. No need in turning down the shank.

This one does not slip.

And a suitable action wrench:

Easy as pie.

That is one stout looking barrel vise Stockcarver. They are not to expensive online, or hard to make if you have the tools. Saves all kind of frustration and damage. A nice long cheater pipe is good addition as well.

I envy you stockcarver, I made a barrel vice of my own but yours is a BMW compared to mine!

I put a hole through my Remington vise for a stock screw to go in and then I soldered a thin brass shim all round for the actions folks are too cheap to reblue. My Vise is a 25 ton hydraulic press, but I agree that with the right tools the job is a whole lot easier.
