Right. Same thing. My opinion, Hodgdon is doing us no favors. Not a fan. I'll stick with Alliant.

at least hodgdon puts out very good load data and alot of it, alliant's site is useless for data!

but it can make some things confusing for a new guy i will admit.

Completely disagree. I find Alliant's data/site most useful. To say it's useless is exaggeration at best and inaccurate for sure. You might say it is not as useful as you would like.

I happen to agree w/ Spawn. Alliant's site is almost worthless IMO. The only reason I say almost is because they do list some data. In this day and age not listing all available loads is doing reloaders a disservice.

Dupont had the SR series and the IMR series. None of the SR powders should ever be tagged IMR. Or the other way around.
Hodgdon has tossed in a bit of confusion now that they refer to the line as IMR When really it's Dupont. But they of course have dropped the former owners name. Go to the Hodgdon site and click on the IMR powder and you'll see the SR powders listed with there proper label. Maybe that's why Hodgdon is just dropping the line. Probably come out with SR 4759 again with a new name and flashy wrapper and sell it like the best thing since sliced bread.

The 'Propellent Properties' I quoted in the other post only listed this powder as SR 4759, there was no listing for 'IMR' 4759. That's all I know, which usually isn't much. Cheers!!! :-D

In the beginning, ie; a very long time ago by today's standards S Rrefereed to Sporting Rifle, and the S R powders didn't have a flash retardant , that's why in most cases there is a muzzle flash.
At the same time I M R meant Improved Military Rifle.

I have been using IMR SR4659 for along time. I have an old metal can with the tiny metal screw on top, still almost full. The company name on this can is DuPont, the powder name is SR4759. Dupont spun off the IMR division quite awhile ago, long before Hodgdon bought them. The bottle I bought this week has the company name as IMR.
I have been trying different powders in this burn range to find what I wanted for the cartridges I shoot. I have tried Alliants 2400, blue dot, MP300, Accurate 5744 & Hodgdon Lil' Gun. The IMR SR4759 has worked the best for me.
I hope the rumor of its demise is not true. I am going to call Hodgdon tomorrow and ask on the status of this powder. I really feel the there could be more promotion of this powder and the almost complete absence of loads for rifles on the Hodgdon website is a shame. The loads listed in most manuals for cast boolits in cartridges like the 30-06 usually start beyond what I find is the most accurate charges. In the cartridges from the 308 size thru the 30-06 usually 16grs to 19grs seem to be the most accurate.

Interesting photo there leadman. So they've turned IMR into a brand name.
They really should let us in on this stupid trickery.

Trickery? It's been that way for years. I'm young enough that I've never seen DuPont branded powders on the shelf. It's always been IMR SR4759. IMR is a brand name and marketed as such. Just go to Hodgdon's website.

It's also not a rumor that the entire SR line of powders is going away. Hodgdon is stopping production do to high production cost and low sales figures. This info was released directly from Hodgdon. If you want any of the powders then now is the time to buy up a supply.

I have used both mil-surp 4759 and IMR 4759 down thru the years and have always objected to the way it chunks thru my powder measures. As a result I went looking for a replacement powder for 4759 for use in my .250Sav, .35 Whelens, and 444Marlins. I've found that Alliant's Reloder 7 fills that bill.
I have a sealed 5 lb canister of IMR 4759 that I would like to trade locally FTF for 5 lbs of Reloder 7.

This 5 lb can of Dupont 4759 is about 2/3s full. When it is gone, I have another just like it. When it is gone, then I am SOL.

TJF1, what is your address? LOL. We are going to have to buy gun safes just to put powder in.

Hodgdon has decided to eliminate the 4579 confusion by stopping production of this powder. Per an email I received from Hodgdon customer support, the last shipments of this powder go out this month.

A shame. It is my go to powder for 30cal cast. But as old as I am I might just have a lifetime supply left.

The Powder might be available, but my funds are not. Darn the luck!!! Just had the LP truck here today, $167, for one month. I could get a decent jug of powder for that. Drat...........

I had about 4 pounds left of a 5 pound can and several months ago when powder was very hard to find Powder Valley got some 8 pounders in so I ordered one. Last week when I learned it was to be discontinued and powder Valley once again had 8 pounders I sat on it for several days and they were still in stock, couldn't take it anymore and yesterday I ordered another 8 pounder. Right after I placed the order I checked their stock again and the 8 pounders were listed as out of stock. I might have gotten the last one. Does that make me a hoarder? Maybe, so be it cause it is my most used powder and it's what feeds 5 or 6 different cartridges/guns for me. By the end of the year when it's gone and possibly forever I'll be good for some time.

Rick,

You must have got it just before I looked, cause it was out of stock.

I went to Graf and bought 16#.

Before I fire a single round of my new .45-70 reloads with 4759 it looks like I have to shop for a replacement. Crud, I wonder if Reloader 7 would do just as well?

Reloader 7 works well with most cast boolit in a rifle. The data in Lymans Cast Manual makes a good case for RL 7

I have never used SR4759. I bought a pound today at my LGS

I came home and did what a good boy should when researching a new powder...came here.

It seemed way to good for lots of different applications.

I found an 8lb keg at Midsouth.

I grabbed one and they sold out less than an hour later.

So, I have 9 pounds and am looking forward to trying it out in several calibers.

AGREED , RL -7 has been my go to powder since it came on the market for my cast boolits , seems like a long time ago. when ever I find some I buy it to keep my supply up for down the road.

I hate to see this powder go. I use it for many rifles. It has never been the best for velocity, but for one powder to load for many cartridges, it is in my top 3. I have quite a bit of it left, and glad I got it when I did. Those 8 pounders should last quite a while.

I wasn't able to find another 8 lb'er but did order 10 1 lb'ers from Brownell's this am. I really hate to see it go the way of the Dodo. The new purchase should give me about 20 lbs That should be enough to do me from here on out.

I just call it 4759 most of the time., and great for high speed shotgun slug work.
Have used old and new, both work the same. Allows load research with more safety
than faster shotgun powders. One of very few rifle powders that shotgun or rifle
primers will ignite in large diameter cases, of 16-12-10-8 ga size. Ed

I find very good accuracy and velocity for SR 4759 in 44 special! Less leading too, I think that is because it starts out with a gentler push then faster powders like Unique, not really sure why.. Then it gains 400 fps in carbines with superb accuracy.

Do you mean 4756? 4759 would be a little to slow for pistol.

If you can't get IMR SR4759 and can get Alliant Power Pro 300 MP this works great also, and measures better. It takes a couple of grains more in rifle cartridges like the 30-06 and my RSBH Hunter in 41 mag.
