not a bad price. but the matching numbers has me puzzled. u.s. military rifles were not numbered like the rifles of other countries. pictures would help.

I'd say grab it. Last nice one I saw brought 900 and that was 3 years ago.

If it is an 1896 that is a steal. If it is a 1898 it is still a very good deal.

If not altered or efinished in any way, with readable cartouches in fine antique condition it is a $1000 rifle on the collector market.

No matter the year, it is a nice rifle with one of the smoothest actions ever produced. If the asking price is worth it to you, go for it. Before handing over any cash I would take the bolt out and give the locking lug a good examination as they do have a tendency to crack.

Unaltered and in very good shape can bring a price of close to a Thousand.Robert

Be sure to look closely at the root of the single locking lug for cracks. Good Krags are going for big money these days, even the bubba sporters are selling for better money than they are worth.

Not too long ago, I was offered an unaltered 1898 Krag, with correct bayonet/scabbard, in what I would've called as (NRA) 'Good' condition for $1150 (and, having dealt with the seller before, believe I might've been able to knock $100 or so off his asking price). Gun belonged to a militaria collector and was for sale because he'd picked up a 'better' Krag somewhere and didn't need the duplication. I passed on the deal but later saw the same gun sell for $1275 on a consignment auction.

If the rifle is as good as you describe, I'd grab it in a heartbeat at that price.

I see lots of sporters out there...between $250 and $500
BUT the one's in 'original' condition rarely go for under $900
