I'm wanting to build one of my Turks into a 34-60. Jess tells me 338 won't always clean up an 8mm.
I would like to find a cheap 7x57 takeoff that was at least .600+ at 22"

Anybody on here got one they'd part with?

Thanks, Woody

Did you check Midway for a barrel?

Did you check Midway for a barrel?

Yes, and everywhere else that I can think of. These Turks are a large ring 98 action with small ring threads. Caliber selection is very low in short chambered, pre threaded, small ring barrels. That's not my biggest problem.
All the 338 barrels I find are 10" twist. I want something slower, 14" perhaps. As I see it my only option is to bore an existing barrel.
I have a call in to ERShaw about a 35 rem barrel. That's probably the way I'll go unless I could find a take off.

As a side question, does anyone know the diameter of a 7x57 at the muzzle?

Wolfer,

I don't know if the following answers your questions:

I read an article a few years back. It claimed that military barrels are tuff to bore out because of the quality of the steel can be an issue.
.
7mm barrel exterior diameters will vary as does barrel profile and tapper. A new American 7mm groove diameter at muzzle should be .284" and bore .277" give or take .0005" or so. Here is a chart of Midway's barrel profiles by brand. I haven't seen Adams & Bennett listed for sale from Midway for a couple of years now. In their place are Green Mountain barrels which uses the same nomenclature:

.
As far as a slow twist barrel at a reasonable price, your best bet is to go with a .358" barrel (358 Win or 35 Whelan 1:14, I believe.). Those calibers have the same rim diameter as the 8x57 so work on the bolt. You'll still need a series II small ring (1 1/4") barrel. That may be a challenge to find.
.
7x57 is a great cartridge and is a quick change for 8x57; the magazine, action length and bolt are good to go. 1:10" is the slowest twist I've seen in 7mm for sale without going to special order. 9, 9.5, 10 are common twists for .284" barrels
.
I hope this helps,

Jess talked like he had no problem boring the military barrel to 35 cal. My favorite rifle to hunt with is one of these with an Adams & Bennett 7x57 F-14 barrel on it. I'm wanting to build one just like it in a more cast friendly caliber.
If I bored a F-14 barrel to 338 it would leave sidewalls at the muzzle of .105 as the barrel is .548
I would like a little more metal than that. My 8mm barrels are .690 on the last step. I was hoping someone on here could tell me if the 7mm was the same outside dimension.

wolfer I wish I knew your need 6 month ago. I have one but been cutting pieces off of it. The last step is .692 on mine.

Good to know the 7mm is the same size. This whole idea is probably just boredom.

Wolfer,
.
The F-14 barrel in 7mm is .550" at the muzzle. Probably too small for your plans with .338". The F-14 makes a nice light handling rifle with that 21" barrel.
