Hi all,

I'm wondering what every body is using to cut case formed brass. I'm using some old 270 to 6.5x55 and have about almost 1/2 that needs to be cut/trimmed.

Any ideas would be gratefully appreciated.

I have made some .308 win cases out of 30-06 cases, and I just simply use my Herters case trimmer. Of course, I'm only doing one or two, so time is inconsequential, as I have to take 1/2" off. I think I would try a tubing cutter. don't put too much pressure on the blade, or it will put a crimp on the end of the case. I think there are some case trimming dies available. Just insert the formed case in it, and trim the excess off with a fine tooth hacksaw.

i cut down 38 special brass to 38sw
by using a small pipe cutter to get them within .010" then trim them
from there
should work in your case

There are file and trim dies that can be use. A small lathe can be utilized for this step also. A stop i the spindle and a wilson style case holder in the chuck a fine cut off blade .020 wide and once on size + .10-.015 lock carriage just keep setting to stop. I have a holder for the drill press and lee cutter with case gage I use also. My cutter is carbide now so I can run pretty fast rpms with a decent feed. A lee collet and spindle drilled into a block of aluminum or steel with a lee cutter shaft locked in place a lee 3 jaw chuck and the cutter / length gage. Clamp a rail on the table so the "fixture cant spin out of your hand. Slide fixture in and out on tabble to remove case. Howe many cases do you have to do? Quanity will determine whats needed. The small lathe set up is fastest and laso most expensive.

I'd still use a regular case trimmer for final step but to get rid of the majority quickly

You can also make a jig and use a bandsaw

I clamp the brass and zip off the excess with a dremel. I have been making 8mm from 270, a tubing cutter wouldnt work with the shoulder. I cut them a little long then finish it up in the trimmer.

I have about 100 I need to do.

Tacleberry, I do have a dremel. How do you "clamp" the brass?

Artful, I like the wooden clamp. HOw did you build that? What should I look for in a jig?

I'm using some old 270 to 6.5x55 No need to cut if you are using the correct parent case, the 6.5X61 Mauser

two pcs wood - drill sideways to put bolt and wing nut on each end - then drill down vertically with bit just smaller than case size at junction of boards.

If you have a good band saw you can just put them in stripper clips and run them thru

If you have a drill press

When I made 7.65mmx53 Argentine brass from .30-06; I sized the brass in the 7.65 die, then used a small tubing cutter on the neck with a final trim using a Lee case trimmer (all I had at the time). A lathe type trimmer would probably be easier for the last step.

Watch your neck thickness.
