I slugged my Mosin-Nagant and it measured .313. The Lyman 314299 200 gn round nose looked liked something that might shoot better than the Lee C312-180R I currently use. I haven't even cast with it yet but I am already wondering what would be the best way to put a metplat on it for hunting purposes?

I plan on casting as soon as we get a break in the weather.

Cast it soft and size with a flat nose plug.

I prefer to slightly HP the 314299 with the 1/8" Forster HP tool. Here's what my 314299 in a 7.62x54R HP'd with such looks like. Many times the a flat top punch can expand the nose or bend it so it won't go up into the bore.

I loaded the 314299 sized to .311" in a 03 sporter this fall for deer. 51 gr of H 4831 for 1,900 fps ACWW alloy. Average size doe quartering away 45 yards quarter size exit wound with major lung damage and a tear in the top of the heart. Of course that big old torpedo exited so I can only guess there was some expansion judging from the internal damage. It definitely did not pencil through.

I just purchased the NOE version of that mold (314299). Larry, that round w/ the HP looks like just the ticket next deer season. I celebrated my new mold by turning my Lee C312-185 RN into a plain based mold. That boolit just didn't cut the mustard in the Mosin.
