This is one I have been building since early last year.I completed it but the Barrel burst at the Proof house.so I have just completed rebarreling it.It is now a 12 Gauge. The whole saga can be seen om the MLAGB Forum under the Shotgun Section titled 16gauge flintlock shotgun. This one has passed Proof Test.

Looks great! Wish I had those kind of skills. May I ask barrel length, choke (if any), and about what it weighs? Sorry, just love a good ML, and my only flint shotgun is a 28ga "smooth rifle", but I want to remedy that one day.

You built a good looking gun that is quite handsome.

There is nothing about that gun I do not like.

yessir! I'll echo all the above.

Out of ballistic curiosity, any idea what were the proof pressure or the load specs used by the proof house on the first barrel that burst?

I would think that a malfunction at the proof house would be better than the range. Nice looking gun.

Lonegun1894,The Barrel length is 36 1/2" including the Breach Plug,It is not Choked, the bore is .740",She weighs in at 7 lbs.I have given it a Right Hand cast to fit me.I like a gun with a lot of drop so it can be shot head up without having to squeeze the face down on the Stock too much.I can see along the barrel top with my face just touching the comb.

Beautiful job Col.! Definitely one to be proud of. I just started inletting the barrel on my flintlock Pennsylvania Fowler kit, I hope it turns out half as nice as yours did. Thanks for sharing with us.

Very classy looking muzzle loader!
When they proof a firearm like that, what do they use for a load?

Pb2a,About 3 times the normal load. The barrel that blew had a fault line in the metal which couldn't be detected under normal viewing.Better at the Proof House than in my Hands. With the new Barrel she shoots good and ignites fast.
A step by step build of the Shotgun can be seen on the MLAGB Forum under 16 Gauge. Flintlock Shotgun.16 gauge was the original cal before I rebarreled it to 12 Gauge.

Sweet!!! What barrel did you use, Colt? And, while I'm being nebby, what lock? I may just have to start gathering up bits and bobs to build my own. Great work!

Hi histed,The barrel is an own made one.The Lock is some castings a friend gave me,I made the internals and springs etc.If you get on to the MLAGB Forum in the Shotgun section and look for 16 gauge Flintlock Shotgun, you can see a blow for blow build of the Gun in pictures. It was an interesting project, not without a serious setback that delayed completion for a while.

Well, Col, My hat's off to your amazing blacksmithing skills! Pretty sure I could file and assemble a lock, but tempering springs, frizzens and forging a barrel is out of my league. Thanks for sharing. Have you used it in the field yet? No clue what the game laws are in England (I just know to stay out of Midsomer County!) so I don't know what and when you hunt.

histed,I have shot some Clays with her.The touch hole is coned on the inside so she lights up fairly quick. The game Laws here for Small Game and Bird shooting are OK for muzzle loading.Stalking large game is a no no with black Powder here.as for Midsummer county, well that has to be the highest concentration of Murders on the planet, pure fiction but entertaining.Remind me of when I was working on your side of the pond and straying out into the boondocks,I could,nt help but keep looking over my shoulder, due to the Movie "Deliverence".

I STILL do that! Looked at your progress report on the other forum - quite the undertaking. Liked the look of your shop, too. Maybe when I retire. Thanks again, Col.
