View Full Version : good 9mm plinker for cast?

Well, as I sit around waiting for a 357 levergun to pop up locally, I have my 9mm dies collecting dust. I'd like to start feeding an auto pistol and this seems like a good enough caliber to use.

I keep coming back to the CZ75... any other ideas?

I'd like to maintain a couple molds that will work both 9mm and 357. I get the sense that SWC don't feed well in auto pistols, but that's probably worth it's own thread.

My suggestion would be some variation of the Beretta 92. I have the compact and it is a ton of fun to shoot with cast. You are right they don't work well with SWC's.

My px4 eats a healthy diet of cast. Also have had good results in a eaa witness (cz75 copy).

A good inexpensive and very reliable 9mm is a Ruger P-95.

My CZ 75B is a tack driver with cast boolits. I use Lyman 358242 and 356402 and Lee 356-125-2R and 365-120-TC all sized to .358. After trying several powders I get best accuracy with 358242 over Blue Dot 6.0 gr @ 1100 fps.

I have read that CZ's have tight chambers but the OAL's listed in the Lyman 4th Ed Handbook worked perfect for me.

Got my CZ 75bd for Xmas and love it. People at the range are just amazed how tight you can group 16 shots with it. Just ordered 2 additional factory mags and rubber bases for all four magazines. The first time that I fired a CZ 75bd was at a gun range as a rental gun and I was sold right then. Just took a while to find one. The model with "POLICE" engraved on the slide has a "round in the chamber" indicator and a lanyard loop on the grip frame.

I'm sure you've all heard it a million times... but the CZ just FITS

I got a CZ this fall. Couldn't be happier. It fits my hand well and it shoots great. My wife and daughter like it too.

I did get a magazine loader, those 16 round mags are a pain otherwise. The mag loader works awesome.

Did you snag one of those uplula dealios?

That is what I got. I wondered if it was worth the money, it was. Dang thing looks silly but damn does it work!

Look online for videos of it in use, they sold me on it.

I have an UpLula for my handgun mags and my AR mags and they're heaven sent. Some people give me that macho BS about not loading my mags by hand blah blah blah, when you're out for a day of IDPA it saves you time and your hands don't get worn out, same thing with extended range trips like when I take the wife/friends to go shoot.

+1 for the UPLULA. I now ask myself, "What took you so long?"

And also all your friends who are still loading their mags by hand? :Fire:

I load 1911 and AR mags by hand but a high capacity 9 isn't gonna work that way for me.

Local gun store has a CZ75B (Omega) for $599, and a couple decocker compacts.

They also have a Beretta M9 for $639.

None of them really turn me on, though. The CZ feels the best, the M9 looks the best and has better controls for my hands. I have no need for cocked and locked, so a decocker is nice. Ambi safety is nice too.

But they still don't turn me on.

Have you ever handled a Browning high Power?

9MM's that are of interest to me personally in no particular order:
- CZ 75 B
- Beretta 92 FS
- Sig Sauer X5
- H&K P7
- Glock 34
- Browning High Power
- Sig P226 9MM (Earlier Models, not the **** being produced now)
- S&W M&P Pro 9MM

Something else might come to mind later, but that's what comes to mind at the moment.

I had that thought in the back of my head, but no, I have not.

I will say that the brand new S&W 41 is the sexiest pistol I've ever handled. Not 9mm, though, and too expensive!

I thought the 41 was a .22LR? Your OP said you wanted a 9MM?

It is .22LR. I was just saying that it was my favorite pistol I've handled. Would be nice to find something similar in 9mm.

I have been shooting CZs for a number of years in IDPA/IPSC. My advice is to get one of the Shadow Line guns I prefer the one without a FLDC - but that is just me. I size all my 125 gr boolits .357 with an OAL of 1.1". If you cant afford one of the Shadow line guns then either the 75B (Get the new frame if you can) or the 85 Combat. The Combat does not have the FPB which should provide a better trigger than the regular 75B. The latter doesn't have a bad trigger just the 85 Combat is a wee bit better. The CZs love lead boolits. Controls are easy to reach and the grip is as good as it gets. Accuracy is excellent and there are a tone of after market parts available at reasonable prices to add all tinsel we sometimes think we need.

4.1 gr of 231 under my 356402 cast boolits is my go to load for IDPA. Very accurate in all my 9MM guns.

Take Care

Bob
ps For carry look at the 75 D Compact. The gun is just as accurate as its bigger brother in a smaller package.

I've cast and shot hundreds of Lee TL356-124-TC bullets out of a Taurus PT92 with nary a single hiccup. I also have the Beretta version in .40SW. Both are well make and a lot more accurate than my old eyes.

Another vote for the CZ75 pattern. They feel great in the hand , the barrel rides low in the frame and the clones are great guns for minamal outlay. Both mine are Tanfolio clones, shoot great . As far as a mold to share , pick up a LEE 358125 RF 6 hole ! Shoots great in 38 special and the 9mm for me and several others on here. Casts great also , I have to size to .358 due to some variation in cavity dia in my mold but at 40$ , I can live with that. Could be that I am getting the mold kinda hot too! Considering I shoot 90% of them at 15 yards and under I don't cull much.

There are many of us who have shot plenty of cast in Glocks with the factory barrel.

.....CZ75B (Omega).....also have a Beretta M9.....

You're a tough nut to satisfy!

Someone already mentioned the idea of a High Power. So I'll add on the suggestion for a 1911 in 9mm.

If it matters at all or might shift your thinking I recall shooting some cast loads through my CZ Shadow and getting consistently tighter groups than I ever got with jacketed.

Another vote for a 9mm 1911, I've used/owned/shot them in the past . Way too much fun!!!

The other thing about having a 1911 setup in 9mm is that a 1911 that shoots 38 supers is a bbl/bbl bushing change away. A 40s&w is a complete upper change away along with 22 conversion kits.

Prices are pretty good for plinking 1911's in 9mm:
ria's $500 or less
38 super bbl/bbl bushing $150 or less
40s&w complete upper with 2 mags $400 or less
22lr comversion kits $323 or less

For under $1400 you could be plinking with for different calibers with a 1911. If you took your time & watched for parts it could easily be in the $1000 range for the 4 calibers.

OH BABY! I'm going to have to go take a cold shower.

What about the Walther PPQs? Those have always made me all hot and bothered. But idk if it's too much service pistol to be a good plinker. Bud's has them for $550

As far as molds. I use MP 359125 and 360640 in both 357s and 9s. Both work great. The 359125 overtop of W231 is a tack driver out of a 6" 586.

Actually, that was an Airsoft replica, but the photo was so nice, I posted it anyway. :) The price on *real* P.08 handguns varies tremendously. Here's a page on the *real* Luger that the Airsoft one was pattered after:

Take a look at the rubber bumper for the magazine bottoms I found online. It replaces the steel floor plate on the magazine.

Sig P6/P225 is a nice one, usually available for a good price. Lee 356 120 TC
works really well in it, and in a number of other 9mms.
