Picked up my .454 lever today finally after 3 weeks. Been looking for one for months but they are always out of stock or way too much money. My lee 6 cav 300g mold came in the other day too. Now to load up some red dot 45lc loads and maybe some 2400 .454 loads. :D

I bought it as a companion gun to my .45 blackhawk convertible. Two guns, 4 calibers. I like the companion gun sets. Have the .44 and .357 levers covered, now just need the .22 and 45 70 levers to go with the revolvers. I'll take some pics when I get off work tomorrow.

You will love the Rossi.
Pull the stock off of it. It is just one screw on the tang. Wrap the the for end in some rags, then open up the action.
Get a can of non-chlorinated brake cleaner and spray out the action. Work the the lever about ten times then spray again. Repeat till the cleaner runs clean out of the action. Lube it with your favorite lube and reassemble. Shoot.
There is always some gunk in the receiver from the factory. This goo can impede functioning. Also, remember the 92 action was originally developed for bottleneck cartridges, so watch you OAL carefully.
The rossi 92's are built very stoutly, as Mr. Browning designed it to be. You should have a lot of fun with it. Plus since it is a 454 you can hunt dinosaurs.

I bet full house 454's will be a handful in this lever. My shoulder hurts thinking about it

At least he gets a butt pad. My 92 in 44 mag with full magnums is tolerable to shoot standing up, but downright painful to shoot off a bench when testing loads, bruises me every time, but I am too cheap to buy a pad...

My .44 R92 wishes is had that same butt pad.

I'm picking up my .357 lever tomorrow from the gunsmith. Had the barrel threaded. That's right, a suppressed .357 magnum lever action. Maybe one day i'll get the .454 threaded for another suppressor. :D

I have one of those 454 "Cannons!"....When I shoot my stiff loads that are use in my Freedom Arms revolver, they REALLY get your attention. Much more than 45-70 lever guns I own. Make a good hole in deer! Gas Checks are the order of the day!

Even with the butt pad you'll know you unleashed hell with stiff 454 loads! I've shot 325 grs out of mine and it's all I ever want to shoot! The darn gun only weight 5 lbs!! But knowing that anything in front of it is in for a world of hurt is conforting! If you ever want something stopped "RIGHT NOW" you now have the gun to do it!

Blademaster,

If you thread the 454 I volunteer my new 45 Osprey suppressor for testing as long as I get to shoot as well.

Don't temp me. If you make it up this way you can sure shoot the .357 with my mystic. I'm sure I can round up a good number of enjoyable cannons quiet and loud to try.

I owned one of those. Do yourself a favor and start with sissy .45 Colt loads and go up from there. I bought mine with a box of 300gr CorBon and fired two rounds. I fired the second because I thought I'd imagined the first. Slow learner. Now I flinch when I see a photo of a Rossi.

Mine was stolen 9 years ago. I think in one more year I will be ready to try again, with lighter loads.

HAHA. I have a similar experience with a 6 pound handi rifle and 3.5" 12 ga shells with a hard plastic butt.

Off to the range to try 21g of 2400 under a 300g lee cast boolit. Lets see how it likes those. Only made up 15 to try.

A 454 Rossi and a BH Convertable? You suck twice! :drinks:

BTW: I ran 20gr of 2400 under a 255gr 45LC boolit in my Rossi as I was trying it in my 45lc BH and it was a handful. Take a firm grip. It will make you a firm believer in Past Recoil Pads which I recommend btw.

That is a load over the Linebaugh recommended maximum of 19gr with a 310gr boolit and 2400. I'd be cautious of this load and you might not want to go that high anyways due to recoil.
Take a look here: http://www.customsixguns.com/writings/dissolving_the_myth.htm. I find H110/W296 better in top end loads than 2400 but that may be personal preference.
Where did you arrive at the 21gr load/300gr boolit combo from?

DougGuy

Exactly.. I find 16.0gr of H2400 a handful in a .44 SBH and it's not max, 18.0gr in .45 Colt is stout with 300gr+ boolits, but 21.0 grains? H110 would be better suited for max loads, I use 2400 when I want a little less than max because I -do not- download H110.

Whiterabbit

you can download H110 just fine in a straightwall case as long as you don't go overboard and push the bullet right down on top of the powder. If you always wanna use the crimp groove then I completely understand and agree. H110 doesn't get happy with empty space in the case.

My thought exactly.
I've approached the top Linebaugh loadings with my 45lc BH because of the lower pressure than the 44Mag but did not go to the Max as it became somewhat unpleasant and I didn't see any Elephant hunting on the horizon.

Those were .454 casull loads for my rossi. Shot fine, recoil manageable. Max load was 24g of 2400 for 300g cast. I would not go anywhere near that in my blackhawk in 45lc. I was using 8g red dot in the 45lc with a 200g boolit last time i shot it.

Yeah, I got to thinking about it and went back to the first post you made and misread what you were doing. My mistake.

Really on the recoil using that load? I find about any recoil manageable if I set my mind to it but it might still be unpleasant. Did you use a recoil pad? I've don't have one in 454 just 45LC but a stout load of 2400 was interesting. Nice info as I there is a gunshow tomorrow and I'm thinking of looking for either a 454 or a 357Mag with a lean towards the 357Mag.

I hear the 357s are hard to find. And a lot of folks are afraid of 454s - so you may have better luck with the bigger cal.
I shoot 45 Colt in mine 95% of the time - no recoil issues at all. And I save the 454s for bears, moose, lions, tigers, or whatever else might invade Saint Louis. (I shot a 200 yard silhouette ram with the factory .454 300gr boolit - it went down so hard that half the shooters came over to see what I was...shooting, and yes, the 454 has too much recoil for a silhouette match - kinds hard to concentrate on the sight when you know you're gonna get wacked. But for hogs this rifle is supreme.
