Well before Thanksgiving I was speaking with an in-law who was looking to upgrade his Sentry 10-gun gun-safe to a larger model he found on sale a Tractor Supply on Black Friday. Well I mentioned that I had been looking for a safe to use as an ammo locker. Well after some dickering we settled on me using $60 in Cabelas points to help purchase him an automatic skeet thrower he found on sale at Cabelas.

Anyway, I got it home and to the best of my lack of any carpentry skill, managed to added some shelves to it so I could store my reloads and primers--and even had room to store factory handgun boxes on bottom.

A post isn't complete without pics so here are a couple. Please keep in mind that I am no carpenter. Ended up buying a piece of 1x10x8 #2 pine for the sides, which I had to drill a couple relief spots for the threaded inserts that the side supports for rifle rest attached to the sides with--I cut this so it was long enough to support the factory top shelf. Also used a 1x3x8 that I cut to the width of the sides, and attached with screws--even at $6 it was considerably cheaper than corner braces to support the shelves. Used some left over 3/4 cabinet grade plywood for the shelves and they just sit on the 1x3 braces. Probably should stain the wood or add the carpet to make it look prettier.

Think it's enough protection, now that everybody knows you have 22 ammo? [smilie=l:

Nice job/score!

An old safe for an ammo locker....Good Idea, I have an old safe that would work well for that. I like the shelving idea too.

thanks for posting

Good job. Do the sides just sit in there sort of "wedged" in place by the shelves so that if you remove the shelves you can pull the sides out?

Thanks for the compliments!

Jonp, the sides are wedged in by the shelves, and the top shelf from the factory is just slightly above the wood used for the sides. Which I expect with weight on the top for them to settle onto the sides. If anyone wants I would gladly disassemble and takevsome addition pics. Obviously, it would vary some by safe used. I think these 10 gun Sentry's run about $160 new.
