View Full Version : How to make 30 Remington brass from 30-30 win?

Hello all, any ideas on how to do this would be awesome. I don't have a lathe unfortunately. I made one using my cordless drill and a file but there must be a better way to turn this stuff down without spending lots on a jewelers lathe.

Thanks for your help.

I did it on the lathe until we got lucky on a batch of new brass, that's the only way to get it I know of.
25, 30, 32 rem all the same case if you can find it , neck up or down, thats how I got the 25rem I needed.
You would think that with the advent of the 6.8 that the parent case would show up on the list more often.

Thanks for the quick reply. I am sure I can find the brass online but for a very steep price. I would resize the newly formed brass into 32 Remington.

I agree the 6.8 parent case issue makes sense but they cut the dang things off too short lol.

What kind of tool did you use to cut the extractor groove?

I just ground a parting blade to the groove width and relief angle and turned the rim off, then plunged to the extractor cut depth.
it cut the extractor clearance profile in one cut. The hardest part was getting the 30-30 case to run true. Now that I have
a collet closer I can go a bit quicker and the run out is not so much of a issue.

I sort of understand what you are talking about. Can you post a picture or two so I can see how to work it.

I ground a piece of HSS to match the .30 Remington groove and rim so I can cut both in one go. I put my FL sizing die in my lathe chuck to hold the brass and only need to center everything up once. I am not sure how you could do it without a lathe with reasonable accuracy and speed. Maybe do a web search on hand drill lathes to make one decent enough to get you by if you are handy?

I made a rim cutter for the lathe and duplicated the rim on an original. AFAIK that is the only way to get the remington rounds.

I have some 30 and 32 Remington I have no use for (no rifle, not expecting to get one). If you are interested perhaps we can make a deal. Where do you live....shipping would be prohibitive? PM answer is ok.

Thanks, I have a Hornady case trimmer and I keep staring at the thing imagining a wat to be able to hook it up on there some how or another.

Thanks much, I have a few empty cases, not many but enough to base the tool off of that I would have to make... I suppose a dremmel tool would be the appropriate method for designing this?

The way I count the shipping would be less than $1 a box. They do not have to go hazmat, just ormd label with UPS or Fed Ex. I shipped about that amount to Fl. for about $16.50

That might be a plan?

Does anyone else have experience with this project without the use of a lathe?

It could be done on a drill press. Trying to do it on a hand-held drill would be a nightmare, IMHO. Would need a mandrel, and the mandrel from a Lee case trimmer for .30-30 would do.

Can these case rims (30R/32R) be correctly finished by a CNC machine using 30-30 cases? Has CB got an enterprising capitalist? 30-30 new cases are all over for exploitation.

Actually with stops and the righ form tool it's not that bad on a regular lathe. I set up a friend with a little 7x12 doing the job and he turned out a batch in no time. I am kind of surprised that Buffalo or someone isn't doing these.

Reading things like this makes me wish I had a lathe. Just did some fast checking on the parent case and they're either out of them or the price is kinda up there. I really do need a small lathe though.....

At some point I could commit to a half thousand of 30-30 made into 30 rem, thus useful for 32 rem and 25 rem....... and lots of rimless caliber bolt guns. Look how our mould entrepreneurs are doing...............BvT

You'd be looking at about .90-1.10 a piece. I've got a better solution I'm working on to have someone make cases since Remington at this time has said they do not have plans to make any more. Same story with the .264 WinMag.

The best way to chuck 30-30 brass to turn off the rim:

1. Use a 1" 5C collet with a collet closer.
2. Hold the case with a L.E. trimmer case holder. Tap the case until it locks in the case holder.
3. Put the case holder in the 1" collet. The case body should run true if you are using new brass.
4. Turn off the rim and cut the extractor groove.

If the brass has been fired there will be a little run out due to uneven expansion. Some of this might be corrected by resizing the brass. I would probably resize using a 32 Special die so I do not have to size the neck.

Why not form 35 Rem cases into 30 Rem cases?

Why not form 35 Rem cases into 30 Rem cases?

Different head size. .458 versus .421 or so.
