Hi,

I really need some expert advice..

I have a conversion kit for the ruger Old Army...

I tried some brass with the Lyman mold 452424, but I had to trim "each" brass because the exposed part of the bullet was a way too long..

I am wondering if that exposed part is shorther in the Lyman 452664 mold...

I do not want to buy to many molds just to try...

X has to be a bit shorter...

Thank you very much for your help

Gerald.

Try seating the bullet deeper into the case and crimping over the front driving band. I had to do this with my model 1894 SRC to get the 44 loads to cycle through the action. If you aren't at maximum, the pressure won't be much of an issue. I used to have to do this with my S&W M27s and the 358429 bullet also.

I have the same issue with a Freedom Arms Model 97 in 45 Colt. The cylinder is short enough that your "x' dimension (crimp-to-meplat) has to be .350" or less to crimp in the crimp groove.

You can do as crowbeaner suggests and seat deeper, trim your cases shorter or find a bullet design with a shorter crimp to meplat dimension. The ones that have worked for me in standard length 45 Colt brass are:

Lyman 452423/Ballisticast #1102
NEI #325 454-270-pbk
Lyman 454190
