View Full Version : Which HP mold for 45ACP to be shot in a 1911

I didn't want to hijack another recent thread (http://castboolits.gunloads.com/showthread.php?225075-NOE-452-230-HP-Mold) which asks specifically about the NOE mold, so I'm creating this one instead.

Which HP mold is best for 45ACP's being fired from a 1911?

I think I want the following characteristics (but would like the forum's inputs on these as well):

4+ cavities
Reversible pin allowing me to cast HPs or solid boolits
230gr HPs
Uncertain whether I care if the mold is aluminum or brass.
Are there other characteristics I should be considering?

I've identified the following options, but would like to know if there are others:

230gr 4 cavity aluminum (http://noebulletmolds.com/NV/product_info.php?cPath=41&products_id=268)
200gr 4 cavity brass (http://www.mp-molds.com/shopping/pgm-more_information.php?id=32&=SID)
Modifies whatever multi-cavity mold I send: (http://www.hollowpointmold.com/)

I am more concerned with reliable loading than in having 230gr bullets.

Thanks,

cbrick

The MP mold you linked to would be the way to go meet your criteria but they are not in stock. Shame because they really are a work of art in brass. Miha (MP) builds molds for group buys and sometimes has a few left over. I have no experience with NOE & reversible pins, Al may be doing that but none of my NOE molds have that feature. Check out the MP active group buys to see what is coming up, if there is one that interests you there will be a wait but they are well worth it.

The NOE large 230 gr HP does have the pins for casting a big "round flat" boolit. It is available in a 4 cavity. I opted for the 2 cavity mold. I have had no feeding problems at all in 4 different 1911's. I have been casting with 1/25 alloy and it performs well. In the expansion tests I did with wet phone books, the boolits opened up to over 1" diameter. The design is of a pivoting pin. Upon opening the mold, the pins pull the HP boolits gently out of the mold and they just drop right out. I'm very pleased with the mold.

I also have this mold and am very pleased with it. It even feeds in my Glock 30S which is somewhat picky. The HP cavity is very large but the ogive is rounded enough to feed well. Aluminum is much lighter than brass. To my arthritic elbows and shoulders this means a lot. My only complaint is due to my lack of physical strength this type mold does not have a smooth bottom due to the HP mechanism and I can't slide it easily along the bar under my RCBS bottom pour pot. Not the molds fault but my problem. Your mileage may vary. I own several MP and Noe molds and they are works of art.

Doctorggg;
You might want to consider putting small ball bearings on your RCBS mould support rod. If you have a local bearing supplier, take the rod with you and they can easily supply you with two or three bearings that will slide on the rod with a lock bushing on either side to keep them in place. Then you can easily move the mould fore and aft without it hanging up.

I haven't yet done this, but just haven't got around to it. I don't have pictures but hope you can understand what I have been trying to say...

There are only 5, 1911s in my house so FWIW the NOE 230HP functions flawlessly in all of them. I also have a custom 220g HP, one of a kind as far as I know and all 5eat these up too.

I'm kind of partial to an old Lyman 452374 that I HP'd. Makes a nice HP for the M1911 and is available.

Use a .140" or a .156" HP depending on how big you want the cavity./beagle

I love the 230 from NOE and I also happen to love the 200 gr from Mp
I own both and would recommend both

Hard to find, but a Geo. A. Hensley #22, or a later Hensley & Gibbs 22 hollowpointed is the cat's meow for me in my 1911's.

MP 200 HP is the way to go, extremely accurate, too.

You will get twice that penetration in flesh or ballistic gelatin, identical expansion. This is in
wet phone books.

Miha closed the Group Buy in November for the copy of the Lyman 452374, and I believe production will be started soon. Might be worth sending him a PM.

NOE's website shows one of the 230 hp's in stock, but it's the small hollowpoint version.

Should I go for it? Will it expand with, say, 3 SOWW to 1 COWW?

Or there is this

The Lee 452-230-TC design is one that feed well in most 45 autos and it's an accurate shooter.

It may work but the small HP is probably better suited for more velocity as in a Ruger revolver or a rifle.

The small HP may plug easily. The 220g I mentioned earlier is a small HP and I've recovered several boolits that got plugged and didn't expand after passing through plastic backer. Haven't tried them through cloth though. They might do better if I softened them up. I usually cast them from straight range lead. I'd personally get it since few other options exist, and it's a dang good boolit. That big fat boolit doesn't need a lot of help stopping anyway.

This is the NOE 45 BD (45-210) which I load in 45Auto Rim.
It is/was available in PB or GC versions.
I am not sure the mold is currently available though.

Those are good looking bullets.

I posted in NOE's vendor forum several days ago, asking about the chances of getting one of the 230-large HP molds made up, and haven't had a response yet. I'm sure they're busy, which is a good thing.

I got a response back from Al Nelson on the 4th (1/4/2014) to an email I sent on the 3rd. They've apparently just moved to a bigger shop. All their phones are down. They just got email back up yesterday (the 4th).

I'll give them a few days then email them. I'm in no hurry for this mold - I'd like to get one in the next couple of months, though.

Don't have any pics I can post yet but have you tried using drill bits to produce the HP. Machinist starter drill bits work very nice too.

Good to hear they expand. What alloy, velocity, and what did you test them on/with. Also what weight are they?

i have the 454-200 HP from MP and i love it.
shot from a handful of 1911s, a sig P220 and a S&W M&P all without hiccups. works amazing.
great bullet and an amazing mold. it works so well.
i cast up a good 500 or so tonight. easy beans

As cast from AC 50/50 they are 233 gr. Speed is in the 875 fps range. Tested shooting down into a 55 gallon drum of water.

I've got the Mihec 452-200. I'm using the round pins still, my penta pins are very rough and don't drop the boolits off well.

I've tried to approximate 25:1 alloy with stickon wheel weights and 50-50 solder. There's a Winchester SXT I shot into the same water as a control and for comparison.

Both of my full size 1911's eat the MP boolits like candy. I have fired 1000's of them through my Kimber and Desert Eagle 1911's. I'll have doubters I know but I have not had any feed problems or malfunction

Down South, I don't doubt it at all. It is based on the Lyman RN profile with
a HP pin added, should feed well. Mine feeds perfectly, too. Look back a ways
in this thread and see what it looks like when expanded.

I only see the 452 diameter on their web site (http://noebulletmolds.com/NV/product_info.php?cPath=41&products_id=268). Do you see a 453 diameter as well? Which do I want for a 1911?

UPDATE: I found the 453s. Which do I want for my 1911? I have a Lubrisizer.

Is the 452 for 45ACP and the 453 is for 45LC?

probably but you can size the .453 to .452 easy enough and to .451 if need be. Kinda hard to size them UP.

This place is hard on my wallet. I went ahead and ordered the .45-230 from NOE and while I was there I noticed they had some RD .30-30 designs in stock. Might as well grab one of those. Decided to go with the GC version, so might as well order some gas checks (from Blammer).

You want the 453 for 45ACP. Keep in mind you are casting with softer alloys to get good expansion. The really soft alloys tend to cast on the small side of things...at least for me anyway.
