View Full Version : Just how accurate are they? 22lr jacketed bullets!

I see this question a lot. After a few years of making these dies and bullets I feel I have never really sat down and attempted to make the best bullets I possibly could from 22lr brass, until now! :)

I spent the last week doing everything I could in attempts to make the best possible 22 cal bullets I could from 22lr brass in preparation for the upcoming postal shoot contest. After today's range season I am convinced they can be just as accurate as nearly any commercial bullet.

What proof do I have..... well two days ago I shot a five shot .51" group with commercial Sierra 52 grain boat tail bullets out of a Savage 223 with a Pac-Nor barrel on it at 100 yrds. I was pretty impressed yet this has always been my "go to" load for a commercial bullet. Well after three days of load development with my bullets made from 22lr brass I was able to shoot a 5 shot .66" group out of my stock Savage 223 rem. I followed that up with a five shot .68" group out of a stock Savage 22-250.

So I am still chasing the accuracy I get from the Sierra match bullets but I am getting very close. I have read a lot of people mention "1 MOA" is pretty typical from 22lr jacketed bullets. I am confident with proper techniques used when making these bullets you can get much closer to .5 MOA, maybe even better.

For me to get under 1MOA from these bullets it took me three days of load testing and following some strict guidelines in the process of making these bullets. If you are willing to take the time necessary in both making these bullets and working on your load development I am certain the results will impress.

ARGH! I can't have customers shooting better then me with the same gun! :) I guess point of the story is I should try some different jackets too. Of course that Southern California weather doesn't hurt either! I've been shooting in 38 degree weather here but at least the wind isn't blowing.

Nice group there Supe!

Good shooting and swage on!

Good shooting for both of you! I am happy getting sub moa with my AR-20"/1-8. The new Geissel trigger helps a lot as does shooting on calm mornings. I think my home grown bullets are plenty accurate. This load was CFE, Wolf srm, 57.6gr, mixed jackets, sorted cases, 15-20mph 7:00 wind.

I wish all my targets looked like that one. Unfortunately, they don't. And yes, bullets fly straighter the closer you get to the equator. I time my shots between earthquakes. Shooting due east doesn't hurt either. :-D

BT, do you have a meplat uniformer available? That alone might get you .1"
My bench guns shooting sierra match kings I usually see a small increase when uniforming the meplats. I'm shooting in the .3's and when everything is right in the mid .2's and I can see a difference when shooting uniformed vs out of the box shot side by side.
