So, I bit the bullet & bought a Ruger Hawkeye. Came with three boxes of shells & a scope mount.

Anyone have any advice on a good mold or load data? I'm not finding much, honestly, nothing at all.

I"m assuming (careful there) you mean the single shot pistol since it's in this forum. If so first I'm envious. Second lots of data still around. My Lee and Hodgdon manuals both have data. Good on you for the purchase.

Yes, its the single shot Ruger 256mag Hawkeye. 8.5" barrel. I looked in my Speer & Lyman Cast load books but no dice. I have found a couple loads online but thought I'd see what some of you folks had to say. I've never been steered wrong here. Should be here next week some time. I'll post some Hawkeye "Porn" later......If I don't get killed by the Wife when she sees the price!!!!

Lyman's Cast Bullet Handbook, 3rd ed. has loads for both rifle and pistol utilizing the 257420 and 257312. It looks like even the handgun data will outdo the .25-20.

To be honest, everytime I read a thread title of "Ruger Hawkeye," I think of the handgun first. I'd like to find one someday, just to satisfy my curiosity.

Hodgdon has data for 256 Winchester using 60, 75 and 87 grain jacketed bullets. They use three powders, H110, H4227, and H4198. These data can be used as a starting point for your load development.

I had a nightmare one night. After I died my wife sold all my guns for what I told her I paid for them.

That would be sad.

Had a .256 TC barrel once and the 257420 shot really well in it. Telling how old I am, I recall when you could buy a NIB Hawkeye for $87.50. Early 60s./beagle

Those hawkeyes are pretty slick. I really like the 256 win mag. I have it in a contender and it shoots great.

First time I saw one, I believe, was in the movie Robinson Crusoe on Mars with Paul Mantee and Adam West. Can anybody confirm or correct that? Thought it was cool looking.

I had a Hawkeye for a while, but couldn't find the original type scope mount for the barrel tapped holes, so I sold it. Now have a barrel for my TC single shot and a Marlin 1894 Cowboy Competition that was 38 special and now is 256 Magnum; neat round I think.

I watched a guy shoot a Hawkeye in an IHMSA silhouette match in Wisconsin way back when - probably early 1980s. Memory is a fickle thing but I believe it was at the Lincoln County Club range at Merrill. This was long before hunters pistol stuff and he shot in a big bore match against Contenders and XPs in more powerful calibers. I was intrigued - I had read about Hawkeyes but it was the first time I saw one actually put to use. As I recall he did pretty well up until the rams, which mostly wouldn't fall - or so my none-too reliable recollections claim.

I always thought Hawkeyes were cool, but never could quite figure out what they'd be good for. Even then they were scarce and comparatively expensive, and I never owned one or shot one. Of course now that I'm much older and wiser I understand that a firearm doesn't have to be "good for" anything to be worthy of ownership and use. I'd love to have one just to mess around with, but at current prices I doubt it will ever happen. Enjoy yours! As long as you treat it gently and keep it well preserved I suspect it will hold its value very well indeed. You might want to mention that to your wife...
