Dropped my application package for First Sergeant to two of our AF Reserve units a couple of weeks ago. Received an e-mail from one asking when I would be available for the Interview/Board the next couple of weeks.

Hoping it goes well. Will post the results.

Good luck. Not trying to be rude, but what does this mean? Do you have to apply for duty stations in the Airforce?

My bad. The position is a special duty job. Nowadays it's a three-year stint but can extend. Would be the interface between commander and enlisted personnel for morale, Red Cross communications, as well as disciplinary actions if need be. More importantly, would be ensuring the family members are taken care of in case of deployment, particularly our single parents. When I was active duty, the First Sergeant, aka "Shirt" was one of two things ... best friend or worse enemy. Just depended on what time you woke him up and how much your bail was.

LOL, it's really bad when your First Shirt knows you by your first name!

Dick it's for the reserves.
if you go full time in a reserve unit you do have to apply for the job and be interviewed just like a civilian does at a normal job.

First Shirt job can be very fulfilling, while also extremely responsible. If I were a Commander, I would want the best man (woman?) in the unit in the position. They can save everyone's bacon...

My question also. In the AF Reserves do you go through a list of available slots and then apply for them?

Pretty much. Everything is based on billets so unless you are in one already, you have to watch for openings to promote to next rank or wait for someone to retire. Each requires an interview of some type, some positions being more formal in front of a panel. They keep a list of slots up to date so those looking can find what's available and make a decision that works for them.

I understand they allow that in several states now...
