My local gun shop received a large bag of copper, rimfire cartridges from an estate sale.

They are in excellent condition but we can't figure out what they are.

Most of them are copper cases but a few look to be brass cases. The copper cases are headstamped "H" and the brass cases are headstamped "U"

Looks like a .32 Short

RIM - Base - Neck - Case Length - Cartridge Length - Year Introduced
0.37 - 0.318 - 0.318 - 0.547 - 0.932 - 1860

I am probably wrong but it seems to me that the head stamp of H and U use to be on Remington/Peters .22 cal ammo years ago.

H headstamp should be Winchester.
U with a dot in it is Remington.
U and nothing else is Union Metallic Cartridge Company

.32 Short Rim Fire.
Introduced in 1860 by Smith & Wesson in their Model 2 revolver. Does not appear in Winchester ammunition catalog for 1960. Last appeared in Remington ammunition catalog in 1960.
FWIW, last appeared in Peters ammunition catalog in 1962.

"H" headstamp = Winchester Repeating Arms Co. [1860 - 1931/5]; Winchester-Western [1931/5 - circa early 1960s]
"U" headstamp = Union Metallic Cartridge Co. (U.M.C.) [1877 - 1911]; Remington-UMC [1911 - 1942]; Remington [1946 - circa early 1980s]

The 32 Short was made with a copper case until about 1950, when the change to a brass case was made.
