I received a chronograph for Christmas and wanted to see how fast my reduced loads were out of my 20" barrel bubba Mosin. First the disclaimer: I only shot one round of two different charges because I'm recovering from surgery and not supposed to be working on stuff and this is all I could handle at the time.

The details: Lee C312-155 ww alloy, Hornady gc, 45/45/10 tumble lube, sized .314, powder was 2400.

Bubba Mosin w/20" barrel - 16gr produced 1352 fps and 18 gr gave 1466 fps

I also fired an unmolested Mosin w/full length barrel - 16gr produced 1449 fps and 18gr gave 1620

Other notes: Bubba Mosin has a worn out barrel and really needs a .316 bullet. Unmodified Mosin has an excellent bore and .314 is the correct size.

16 gr. of 2400 with the Lee ctl-160-r is my load in the Mosin. I gotta get me a chronograph. I've been stumbling around in the dark without the slightest idea of how consistent my loads actually are.

I just saw this thread. Thanks for the report KLR.
Best wishes as you recover in 2014!

Thanks KLR. I've wondered about 2400 in the Noisy Magnet. I've got lots of it but haven't used it in one yet. My best load so far has been with a full case of 4831. Very accurate.

Welcome to the forum.

I had my finn 39 out yesterday. I was shooting 2 different loads. 13.0 grs of unique and 19.5 grs of 4759. bullets for the first load were the 311291 sized to .309.
2nd load was with the 4759 and 311299 bullet run up through .311 sizer both bullets had GC on.
four shot groups produced 1" @ 50 yards. both groups produced a flier. more than likely me.
in an article in the 1980 lyman cast bullet handbook, Frank Marshall quoting his uncle as saying " with this load the powder is not the thing, but the velocity "
1600 fps is optimum for accuracy.
the cool thing was not only the accuracy, despite the fliers was the bore. after 50 rounds it was clean as a whistle. lube used- lee alox.
this is my first outing with these loads so I have some more work to do, but was very encouraged.

I just posted five reduced loads for the 303 Brit yesterday that might be useful.

http://castboolits.gunloads.com/showthread.php?226518-Five-303-Brit-Cast-Bullet-Loads

The 7.62X54R is essentially the same bore size as 303 Brit, but with its larger case capacity, 2-5 grs more (depending on the powder) would be needed to attain similar MV's with the 178 gr bullet. Based on what you did with 2400, with the 155 gr bullet you're using, in your gun I'd estimate:

1. Red Dot - 15.0 grs - 1600 fps
2. SR4759 - 20.0 grs - 1600 fps
3. H4227 - 22.0 grs - 1600 fps
4. IMR4198 - 25.0 grs - 1650 fps
5. IMR3031 - 32.0 grs - 1750 fps

Thanks guys. I'm healing fine. My plan for this spring is to hone out my mold and sizer to .316 and work up a load for deer hunting. I'll report back with future developments.
