That's called caliber envy.

The boolits weighed out at 333 grains.

Nice I like it, and with those boolits it'll be a hammer for sure.

Make sure when you get that rifle in to check the throat. My handi will seat a 500gr Lee RNFP with one lube groove exposed and still have room. Accuracy is improved with a few loads seated closer to the "throat" / "forcing cone".

I don't think I have caliber envy, .... more like "model envy".
I already have a .45-70, just not a Handi!:Fire:

The more I use my Handi Rifles, the more I appreciate them.

Congratulations! I've wanted one of those for a while but the right deal hasn't crossed my path. And those chunks of lead do look scary.

Well, that's got to be a first that I've heard of. Most of the straight walled non-handgun calibers (38-55/444/45-70) are infamous for short throats. I couldn't even get a 44 cal 310 Lee to seat using a seating groove the throat was so short - needed to shove more boolit in the case. What are the two letter codes on your receiver (for the date of manufacture)?

That 333gr slug looks like one honkin' bad case of hurt.

Handi Rifles and known for "generous" SAAMI spec throats. They seem to work well regardless.

That bullet pops the eye but looks like it will tear up a lot of meat.

I stumbled into one of those H & R Handi rifles a few years ago. I picked it up and took it home. It was in 38-55 caliber and it has served me well ever since.

It is an easy caliber to load for and a hoot to shoot. Easy on the recoil and heavy on the fun. Accurate as any rifle I have inside of 160 yds unless I am using optics on another competitor. It draws a crowd on the firing line if I am using the Holy Black powder. I had so much fun with it that I bought another rifle in the same caliber. This one was a Marlin 336 Cowboy specimen which I obtained from a forum member. It had been fired previously but was in NIB condition.

That did not last too long. I added a Marble tang peep sight to the rear, a Lyman globe sight to the front and a good leather sling. Excellent coyote medicine out to 200 yds but a mite too much for jackrabbits here in the desert area near Las Vegas. It is an excellent plinker and a joy to shoot with BP once I figured out how to clean it properly.

Now I am working on getting decent accuracy out a mite further. I am hitting a large steel gong repeatedly at 300 yds and that is a blast. If the rifle gets overheated then I put it down and pick up my Garand for a bit. The next project is to get the ingredients to make my own BP. After that will be laying my paws on a flintlock rifle so as to allow me to shoot even if our sock monkey bans primers and powder etc.

I am so ashamed of the Republican party for allowing that miserable example of humanity to win another 4 years in the White House.

Those 45-70 rounds look impressive ! I bought my daughter a 7mm-08 handi and she loves it. My buddy has a full sized 25-06 (not so handi) that shoots clover leafs at 100 yards. They are not bad for the money. Both guns came from members on here.

Those bullets look like they would be a hog hammer, for swamp work at short (60 to 90 yds) in NW Florida. Lonzo

The throat on this one is short also, gonna have to seat well below the crimp groove. Looks like I may be 0.050" or 0.060" past the groove.

i've had a 45-70 handi for a long time (mid 90's). I've shot many different cast bullets in it. the best shooting cast bullets in my rifle are the Lyman 385 gr RN and the SAECO 883 500 gr RN. i shoot them as cast (no sizing) and lube them with Lee Liquid Alox. i use AA 5744 at trapdoor load levels. i get a honest 1362 fps with the 385 gr bullet and 1256 fps with the 500 gr bullet. these are very accurate powerful rounds and kill very well. i am more partial to the 500 gr bullet but either will kill deer and hogs with authority. awesome rifle/calibre.:-D

I had to use a reamer to deepen the throat on my Buffalo Classic.
Not hard or expensive to accomplish and well worth the effort.
My BC consistently shoots 1" to 1 1/2" 5 shot groups at 100 yards.

I got the throat reamer from Graybeards and reamed mine out about 1/4" will seat nice long bullets now. ;) 350's was pushing it before.

The older I get, the more I appreciate the Handi rifles.

I have placed some very large grins on the faces of some new shooters with them. Especially with the 45-70. A 500 grain boolit over twelve grains of Universal Clays out of my twenty two incher will do just over an inch at 100 yards. Enough kick to let 'em know they've fired something with some authority too. :)
