I am looking for a replacement stock for a J C Higgins model 583.13. I am not having any success finding one and thought maybe somebody here can point me in the right direction!

JC Higgins never made a single gun. Figure out who made that one and you should
be able to find a stock to fit it. If it is an old .22, good luck, probably have to make
or adapt one, although there are some .22s that were made in very large quantities.

Need more info to give a better answer. Not a clue what a 583.13 is in "real life".

According to the Blue Book, the JC Higgens 583.13 was made by High Standard and is the same as High Standard Model 10.

Numrich seems to be sold out of 12 or 16 gauge stocks at present - they do show 20 ga stocks available.

Now the other thing is - what's wrong with your stock? - Cracked or other minor damage can often be repaired with little epoxy and maybe a brass rod or two.

Thanks for that info! That gives me a good place to start on! As far as what is wrong with the stock; my cousin's husband picked it up at a sale pretty cheap. The problem is, somebody with terrible skills tried to carve their name into the stock.:groner: So in large letters it says Nate right across the stock. It looked like they tried to do it with a punch, as it looks like a bunch of holes connected to make the letters. And they are deep. It looks like a child did it. And then they went and smeared a bunch of polyurethane on top and have drips and runs all over the place. So in order to sand that out, you would probably have to take at least a quarter inch off.

ps. It is a 12 guage bolt gun.

Little filler and a sanding job - then a coat of truck bed liner - tacticool black plastic stock - gun prices on it seem to be 90 to 160 depending upon condition - price of a new stock from Numrich is $80 (if they had available) I wouldn't want to put too much into a beater shotgun as you'll not get your money back out when sold and it ain't family heirloom quality.

Tell me more! I have never heard of doing that and it seems like a good alternative. Would you take the entire stock down to bare wood? Would you use some kind of sealer first? And where is a good source for the bedliner? I am really intrigued with this!

Yep, get rid of the polyurethane and fill then sand - priming will depend upon the bed liner instructions

paint isn't bad choice for project that is meant to be abused.

Sir, you are a lifesaver!!! I owe you BIG-TIME! Thanks so much for the info! I will go the spray on bedliner route. Better than spending 80 for a new stock!!

There was a recall on those shotguns some years ago, from Sears IIRC. It seems they were supposedly dangerous or something. You had to mail in the bolt from the gun, and they would send you a check for $160, and destroy the bolt. I've seen a number of the bolt-less guns around over the years.

I have one of these bolt action golf clubs(so does Harry Reid, drags it out when he wants to look like a gun owner in photo op---- ***..) anyway, I also have a spare stock in good condition if you're interested. Never could get the gun to eject, extractors just flat refused to let go of the emptys, switched them, replaced them, filed them, no luck. one constipated firearm..

Both the gun and Harry deserve each other.... maybe the bedliner stuff would help ole Harry too???

Well I did the bedliner thing and was very very happy with the results!:bigsmyl2: I am planning on keeping this in mind if I ever get such a terrible stock again!
