when my throat slug popped out i knew why it was shooting 3 in groups at 50 yds. it looked more like a 35rem than a 30 cal, .650 long tapered throat. i looked at service rounds thinking to duplicate and thought wow .323 bullet .296x307 barrel it will never work. lyman 314299 .314 2 wraps paper wound up at .322 i loaded 10 after making an expander spud at .320. 19 grs of wc 820 has been working great in my k31s so thats what they got. i shot the first one (russian mine detector style) into the dirt holding it away from my face. the next 4 went into an inch at 50 next 5 did almost 2 inches at 100
.322 slug .296 hole who woulda thunk it

I'm using as cast .311's pushed with 5gr of 700x and getting nice shooting with them.
But it's been too cold to go out and formerly test them, it's -47 this morning with the wind chill.

zuke that sounds like a great plain base load, the cast load i tried was the 200 gr lee which is what my k-31 likes, i tried both .309 and .311, but even the long 200 gr failed to reach the rifling in that long funnel of a throat

Try the NOE 247gr blackout boolit. It will get into the barrel enough to center in the bore. Please do not push the 1889 past 35K or so, pressure wise. It's not a 1911 or K-31. These were designed for GP11 pressures.

as easy as the the paper patching thing was i will just go with that, surprising but pleasing results. i just never thought extruding a .323 down to .307 at 30k of press would work this good, but as i think on it the service round was in use for a while. the only unknown in this was bullet hardness mine water quenched at around 20 bhn.

There could be a limiting factor in accuracy in that with the swaging down, the trailing edge can get cupped with a feathered edge with rifling land impressions forming 'tonges'. A rebated boolit may be better for that reason. Accuracy may be improved by increasing the diameter so the boolit sits firmly into the throat. With a paper patched boolit one does not need neck clearance to release the boolit, meaning the neck does not need any sizing, only a mouth flare. The paper compresses on seating which gives the neck a firm grip on the boolit. A lube is needed for seating. I use STP Smoke Stopper on my lube pad onto which I roll the patched boolits before seating. The lube soaks away leaving a firm enough grip so that the boolits do not move in the magazine on firing. I have found that amount of lube is enough to lube the patch on firing.

303 guy it is a gas check bullet without the gas check so in a sense it is a rebated bullet
