The spout is gone and the spring is broken but I think I can find replacements.

You better look around down there some more! That's a great find and yes you should be able to get the other parts easy. I've replaced a couple of those springs myself....

Sweet find! What have you learned about it? Do you know how old it is?

Civil War flask for the rifle musket, great find. Beware though as back in the 1960-s the Italians were making copy's. The top should be marked by the manufacturer.

I'm sure it is a reproduction even though I can't find any markings on it. Back in the late 70's or early 80's this thing showed up. My father and I used to belong to a club that shot nothing but muzzle loaders once a month. We went to a rendezvous every year. I had not seen it since I left in 86. My Father died in 88. My Mother stuffed a bunch of this shooting stuff into storage. I remember we had molds for our rifles and revolvers and several different flasks and horns. I went down to the basement looking for something else and spied a couple of lead ingots sitting up on a rafter, as I was snagging them I saw this flask, also stuffed up there. It my not be an original, but it sure is worth something to me. The spring screw is rusted on pretty good so I am soaking it in Kroil to loosen it up. I think I saw replacement parts on Dixies site.

I have one of those made in Italy that I bought back in the 1960s. I still have and use it.

They are usually stamped on the top part of the flask where the spout goes. It's good or priceless to have things to remember by.

It was called the "Peace Flask" because of the handshake portrayed on it.

They are great flasks you can buy different grain spouts for them. They also make a funnel that screws in the top to make it easier to fill.

You nailed that one. I just cast the two ingots into .451 balls. The lead came from cable sheathing my Dad brought home and I cut it off with my tomahawk in the back yard. We smelted it in an old iron pot over a wood fire. I remember looking at all that lead with almost lust in my soul, I was young and balls were expensive. The free lead was like hitting the lottery. I know there has to be more up there, we cut up like 200 feet of cable. I remember stacks of ingots. I know I didn't shoot it all up. That flask is dear for that reason, repro or not it's an original to me. I had forgotten so much, this just jogged the memories, As you said, priceless.

Should be a "Piece Flask" don't you think? As in, I can keep the peace as long as there is powder for the Piece.

that flask was issued with the 1841 rifle. so it would predate the war between the states.

Bob, Thanks, I actually own an original 41 Harpers Ferry. I finally got it (the flask not the rifle) apart after a week of soaking in Kroil. I will order the replacement parts and some spouts. If they fit that will prove its a repro. I'm sure the originals didn't use metric threads. Thanks Guys.

Definitely identified as a repro. I spent a few hours tonite looking at originals on the net. The collar and the spout and spring system are totally different on an original. I'm still thrilled with it and plan to fix it up and use it.
