I bought a decent 1851 Navy the other day. Is Lee the only people offering conical moulds for this caliber? Has anybody out there tried conicals in their Navy?

the lee conical works good in my .36's both colt and Remington. even loaded them in .38 s &w cases for a conversion. I can say the same for the .44 conical in a Remington also.

I just bought the 45 cal 200 & 250 REAL molds for my Ruger Old Army. The 250gr shot better for me, and closer to point of aim of my round ball loads. Only a couple of inches high (with still a few clicks down left on the rear sight) and very good groups. I cast and sized to .454(bore is .452) in a LEE push through die, lubed with LLA, and topped with 50/50 Beeswax & Olive oil to keep the fouling soft. Works for me...

I've been tryin' the Lee 36 cal conicals in my Uberti Colt Navy. They do pretty well, but with the same powder charge they hit a tad higher than the round ball (which isn't surprizing - more mass, more dwell time in the barrel = higher launch angle). You may find you have to adjust your aim. Accuratemolds.com has at least one heal-based conical for C&B revolvers, and he says he'll make anything you want for the same price.

It just depends on what you want to do with it. The round ball shoots pretty well, and rips the heck outta steel soup cans. Round ball would also make a good rabbit & squirrel round. The "Consumable envelope cartridges" back in the day, as sold by the millions to the military, always used conicals, so it depends on what ya be intendin' to shoot.

Kaido has a heavy FN bullet of 140 grns. Lee makes them for him.

You can also have Accurate Molds make you a custom mold.

This a round ball mold with a skirt added to fit the Pietta chambers diameter. Solves all the problems of juggling powder charge versus boolit weight, of maintaining alignment during seating, of having a shear ring to seal the chamber, of the front being a good fit to the loading ram, of having enough lube up front but not too much. Molds for the .36 percussion revolvers are pretty hard to come by and getting one that actually fits can give you fits so this just seemed like the thing to do.

Many years ago, Lee also made a conical for the C&B revolvers with a hollow point. Both 36 and 44.

Good Cheer, where did you get that mould?

It's a round ball mold altered by Erik at http://www.hollowpointmold.com.

that mold looks like the one I made over 20 years ago for a 3" ordnance rifle. only mine was a lot bigger. it cast a 6lb bullet.
