View Full Version : RECALL! BTSniper 22 cal core seat base punch

Discovered a flaw in my latest batch of 22 cal core seat base punches. This recall only applies to strictly the 22 cal core seat base punches for either the shell holder style RCBS or threaded base punch LEE applications, more so with the Lee because of their longer length. Any and all other base punches, whether it be a different caliber or for a different die in the 22 cal set, are good to go.

I apologize for not catching this sooner. Hopefully I can get notice to those of you before you experience any issues. This is a simple fix and I will certainly make all necessary corrections to future products.

I tried something new, I used W1 tool steel for the core seat base punch. The concept is perfect but my application of heat treating/hardening to these punches was flawed. Some of the resulting punches have turned out too soft either because of lack of enough heat treating or too much tempering after heat treating.

I am able to correct this problem with reapplication of heat treatment. Simply send me the core seat base punch, used or not and I will correct the issue and return it in very short amount of time. Should be able to have it in the mail the next day after I receive your part.

This only pertains to the latest batch of core seat dies I sent out. You will know if you have one of these base punches by the constant diameter of the punch from base to tip. Previous designs had shoulders and relief groves machined into the punch. Please see pic below to see the difference.

Here you can see the two styles of punches, on the long punch of the older version on the left you will notice it has the relief grove and shoulder at the base. The relief groove or shoulder of your punch may not match exactly to the one pictured but you should see the difference between it and the new punch. The new recalled version on right is the same diameter from base to tip. (pictured punches are only examples to show the difference and are not actual 22 cal size)

Below you will see the potential problems with my latest batch of 22 cal core seat base punches. New punch on left, swollen punch in middle and extreme flawed punch on right.

Sorry for any inconvenience this may cause. I will get this matter taken care of and continuously strive to make the best quality dies I possibly can.

Let me know if you have any questions. Please inform me in a PM or here in this thread if you are sending on of these latest 22 cal core seat base punches back to be fixed. My address is posted below. Be sure to send the part with some sort of tracking #.

Those pictures sure do give a pretty good idea of the stresses that act on a swage die!

yeah... but had I done a proper job of heat treating these 22 cal core seat punches it wouldn't have been an issue at all.

You just gave some of us a deeper appreciation of what heat treating can do.
Thank you.

Brian, I might have a set of your does, but I have been in business, and also worked involved with other businesses as an employee.

Making a mistake happens. It gets forgiven.

Owning up to it, and making it right virtually guarantees forgiveness.

Not owning up to it, nor making it right virtually guarantees no forgiveness.

You've clearly done right by folks, and making things right. That's priceless to some of us.

I've said before that it was circumstance that caused me to go the path I went. That said, I trust you much further than who I bought my equipment from.

Your welcome. I predict all should be good now with fully hardened punches but pay attention to it for the first couple hundred seated cores and let me know if you have any further issues with the 22 cal core seat base punch.
