greetings folks, yesterday i traded for a new win. 94ae trapper in 30/30. ive been shooting and handloading for 40 years and this is my first lever action and my first 30/30, i have dies and several 30 cal. boolit molds. the mold im leaning toward is a lee .309 170gr fn, the boolits drop from this mold at.310 on the bands and .302 on the bore riding nose. does anyone have any pet loading data for this boolit? thanks for any help.....sc03a3

03A3, try this:

http://www.castpics.net/RandD/load_data/load_data.htm

I'm of the opine that cast in 30-30 (and 32 Spl and 35 Rem) is 'mo betta' than factory bullets by a long shot (pun intended). sundog

I would say that using the Lee 170 gr sized .310 with Hornady GCs, Javalina lube and 24-26 gr of any of the 4895s will make you a happy camper.

...........sc03A3, if that's the case, you have been a very underpriveliged shooter/gunowner. I thought EVERY gun nut had atleast one of'em :D. Very interested in hearing of your test!

1. Make certain your barrel is free of jacketed bullet metal fouling

2. Cast your bullet of air cooled WW or harder

3. Size your bullets .310 and lube with a good lube

4. Load over 17/4795

5. Shoot

This load may not be the very best in your particular rifle, but it will be a good one. If your rifle won't shoot this load as well as factory ammo, then you have a problem somewhere.

charger, loaded 50 rds today before reading your post, i used 16.5grs of 4759, the lyman book shows a max of 17.7 so i started a bit low. the boolits are cast of ww/lino mix, water dropped, oal is 2.510. i will try to get to the range tomorrow for test.
buckshot, there was just always a gun i wanted/needed more than a 30/30, but this little winne has taken care of that misconception, if it shoots as good as it looks, im in love......thanks guys,,,,,,sc93a3

Let us know how the shooting come out with that 16.5/4759 load. The 17 grain load won't be any better or worse, just a little faster.

1. For low velocity loads under 1.5K fps, 2400 or one of the pistol powders is what you need.

2. For velocities in the 1.5K to 1.8K fps range, 4759 is my powder of choice.

3. For velocities of 1.8-2.3K fps, I like 4895 or 3031.

The 30-30 is almost the ultimate cast bullet rifle and easy to find a good load. As stated, make certain your barrel is free of metal fouling (I use Sweet 7.62) or you are doomed to failure and frustration.

charger, i just got back from the range, and the results on the new 94ae and cast loads were outstanding. after adjusting the sights the groups were under 2" at 50yds. im impressed with the accuracy considering the 16" barrel, crude sights and 60 year old eyes. next step will be a receiver sight to help my old eyes. thanks for your help getting me started with this project....sc03a3

I agree with Chargar with the addition of W/W 748. This is an excellent powder for full charge loads in the 30-30. Using wheel weight air cooled and aged i can shoot a 170 gr. bullet at 2000 fps with no leading and as good of accuracy as the jacketed bullets. These bullets expand well on deer size game also.

....and luckly, 748 is darn similar to surplus 844!!!

sc03A3 I would not go any higher than 17/4759 even though the " books" give higher loades. In a 20" bbl 17 grs. will be about 1,750 fps which is just about perfect for plinking, hunting small game and deer. A hollow point will open up well at tht speed and not blow up as it might at a higher velocity. The rifle and barrel will become everlasting with loads at that level. You can boost the velocity to 2.2K fps, but you will gain very little or nothing at the terminal end other than a little flatter trajectory.

When you get above 1.8K fps with 4759 accuracy will start to drop off in most cases.

Everything we say about cast bullet shooting has to be tenative and conditional as there are so many exceptions to everything, even the most rigid rules must be flexible.

today i loaded 50 rds with the 17gr load, will test tomorrow. i also loaded 10 rds with 19gr turk pull-down powder for a test, i get excellant results with the turk powder in the 7.5x55 and 7.62x54r with cast boolits, i have about 20lbs of it so if it works in the 30/30 im set for quite some time. thanks again for your help.....sc03a3

That Turk pull down powder, which I label TS in my reloading data, works very well in the .30-30. 20.5 grains with all the cast boolits tried from 155 grains to 185 grains has worked very well in my old long tom Savage 99. Another shooter even won a match with it, long ago and far away. Ask Jaremy.

Shame on you, Buckshot. TS=Turk Surplus.

sc1903a3, mine is 1941, 1943 and 1944. It's mixed together, don't have a chronograph anymore, and accuracy seemed identical with the different lots when I tested them, so there has been no worry on that score. It works well.

I'm with you KSCO on the 748 & the 170 gr. 311041. Likewise for H-335. It's the best with full power & will outshoot any factory stuff.
