I have uploaded some observations on the use of quicksilver (mercury) to harden bullets, and the development of bullet alloys by John Rigby & Co. - Rigby, Quicksilver & Bullet Alloys (http://researchpressuk.wordpress.com/2013/12/26/quicksilverrigby/).

At the foot of that article are links to other notes on bullet alloys that I have posted.

David , again - Thank You for the informative Rigby article added to Research Press.
Mercury & Bismuth? Interesting ... cheap then but expensive now

Do NOT put mercury in molten lead!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Vapors are deadly!

Years ago, watchmakers used to coat the works of watches with a gold/mercury amalgam then heated up the metal to flash off the mercury, leaving the gold bonded to the brass.

MANY employees were severely injured and killed by this process.

Leave mercury for filling clock pendulums, accurate barometers, and other scientific endeavors.

I use bismuth in one of my alloys (~50%). It does harden! And is safer than lead....for all of your Commifornia shooters out there. That is what they make PeptoBismol out of! But very pricy.
