Hi Guys
Have a Cimerron High Wall 40-65. Having some difficulty with acceptable accuracy.
I'm having the best luck with RCBS 300 gr boolit using Accurate 8700 powder and Win Mag primers. Much unburned powder and sooting if the cases. My question is this, with any of the other powders that leave most of the case empty the accuracy is poor but the case expands to seal thus no soot. I have never used any fillers Puflon, bathroom tisue etc. Is ther a rule of thumb to reduce the powder charge? In the case of bathroom tissue , just stuff it in and fill the case or just a small amount applied with pressure. Any info would be appreciated.

I can't help you with the rule of thumb but when I load for my 45/70 I like to use poly-fil and with cast bullets there is always plenty of space left in the case, all I do is put enough in the case to keep the powder in place and lightly tap it down. I don't think the small amount I put in the case could adversely affect anything.

Bullshot,

I tried 8700 and didn't like it not good in the accuracy dept. You'll have better luck with Trailboss or 5744.

Now here it comes.........Why are you shooting smokeless in it?
Try BP you'll love it..............

If I understand this correctley you're only putting enough to keep the powder charge in place and not filling the case up?

I used both 5744 (which works very well in my Sharps 45-70) and trailboss. Both shoot horrible groups in the 40-65, I can't even keep trailboss on the paper at 100 yds. I can get the 8700 down to 2 1/2 to 3 in at 100 yds but the unburned powder and soot starts to foul the chamber.
Regarding the black powder, Its difficult to get here and I'm not big into all the cleaning. I,m just a paper puncher
Thanks guys

You might try magnum primers. If you look around maybe under Surplus powders there is a thread on duplexing the slow burning powders to eliminate the extra unburnt powder.

Put a .5cc charge of 3100, 4895, 1680, ect in first then fill case with the 8700 and make sure it is compressed. It will make all the difference and also get you about 250/300 FPS volocity.
Look at the post down the page entitled "Remington Rolling Block" a good discusion there and that target can be duplicated at the range, shot a .78 10 shot group with the load described in that thread after I posted the picture at 100 yds.
If you want I use a blow tube to get rid of any trash every once in a while. Don't give up it is cheap and fun.

There you go! If you can't find it here it can't be found anywhere.

BOZ 330-- I am using Win L R Mag primers.

Freightman --I'm using an RCBS 300 CSA bullet which weighs 328 gr using ww.The charge is 52 gr Accurate 8700 and a Win L R Mag primer. I'm a little nervous about duplex loads as I have never tried them. I guess theres not much pressure in the load that I'm using or I wouldn't havt the soot on the case. What would you suggest starting with in grains and what would you use for powder. You mentioned several types so I'm guessing its not too critical.
Thanks guys

That is correct.

It just needs to be a faster powder so it will cause the very slow powder to ignite, and I use that load with a 405 hb, 450GC, 300 PB and a 500 GC all chrno at black powder volocity. I am no expert but if you are uncomfortable just use a .3cc dipper of the faster powder .5cc just works better for me, I do not think you can stuff enough 8700, wc860, wc872 or IMR 5010 in a case that size to be over pressure.
I will say that I wouldn't use them at a reduced load as I think then you would see some problems I believe they as BP need a little compresion.

A load that I had very good luck with in my 40-65 was 14gr of unique behind the RCBS CSA 350 gr boolit, no filler.
A filler that I have used with luck is Kapok, just not in the 40-65. Now days all I shoot in it is BP. Rifle clean up is actually easier than smokeless, but the cases are a little bit of a pain.
