40 cal

I have never paid any attention at all to the 40 cals for some reason. My son each has one, and are apparently happy with them, so I thought I would pick them up some ammo for christmas. After getting some sticker shock, I have to ask, what is so much better about them????? 69.95 a box for ammo, makes factory ammo for a 45 colt seem cheap. lol

I have a mold and sizer on the way for a member, but he isn't getting ammo for christmas. lol

Howdy !

As a practical matter..... the .40S & W for example, managed to give shooters adequate " stopping power " ( superior to the 9mm ), along with a higher round count
than one often has with many of the .45ACP guns. Also, for some.... ergonomics of the new-wave .40's is held to be better than that of say.... a 1911.

Felt recoil comes across as less than that made by a magnum load shot from a 4" .357Mag revolver.

Similar to the .38-40, the .40 S & W functions well w/ bullets of a diam between those of 9mm and .45calibre. These bullet weights are in just the right zone to
facilitate achievement of enough velocity... for many .40 S & W rounds to make it into ( quasi ) " sweet spot " on " stopping power ". The .40 S & W case also is of a useful case capacity, mostly thanks to its larger diameter than what the 9mm has.

Wow, $70 for a box of ammo, yikes! We're running about $35-$41 for the 100rd Winchester White Box and $19-$21 for a box of 50 Federal. I guess what I like is the brass is cheap and typically plentiful.

I have a 40 and never paid that much. At my walmart federal 100 pack is like 35-37. My reason for picking the .40 over the 9mm (PPQ M1) was looking back at the last scare. Store sold out quickly out of 9 and 45 and .40 typically stayed. same thing happened again with the most recent scare. 9 and 45 went quickly .40 lingered on. first time though I saw it selling out but usually the fastest to be replenished. Then again .38 spcl/.357 mag as well 44 mag were selling out fast too.

I would go blind looking at the price of factory .40cal here. I cast my Lyman mold out at 180 gr using water quenched WW. With the cost of primers at $3.80CDN/100 I shoot the .40cal as cheap or cheaper than my .22lr. Same as my 9MM and .45acp/45Colt/.44mag using cast.

Never bought .40. But have priced it, usually $5 more expensive than 9mm.

40sw brass is the cheapest brass there is. Even cheaper then 9mm in my experience. Members on this forum have remarked that they just couldn't sell their 40 brass at a price that justified the cost of shipping. I'm talking about $25/k brass going to the scrapper because it wouldn't sell. That's crazy.

Shooting 40 is just good clean cheap (ifn ya know what you're doin) fun.

I had a couple of fortys back when they first came about. The only advantage fortys seem to have over 45 acp is that they fit in a smaller frame, which could be handy. A few more shots could be a good thing. I don't crunch numbers to arrive at ballistic conclusions, so I don't believe that the forty will ever surpass the 45, and that although the forty is bigger than the 9mm, if I already have a 9mm & decent ammo, or a 45 with practically any ammo, I have no real reason to change to forty.

My word, what in the world did you buy (type and brand)? Where did you but it? For that price ill gladly sell my factory stash!

LOL I didn't buy it, and I can't even tell you the brand, but there was two choices, 69.99 for 50, and 27.99 for 20. lol What i wound up getting was a box of 250 berrys plated bullets for I think 31 bucks and a hundred starline brass for 26 bucks. That will get him started, I have a lee mold and sizer die coming for it, iirc it is 180 grain (hopefully it will work) and hopefully I run across some of that 25 buck a thousand brass. I know someone had many thousands of it not too long ago.

At my walmart federal 100 pack is like 35-37. Cheap to Re load!!!!! almost a cheap as 9mm. Powerful round.

I have a 40 and love the fact that it's a cheaper round to buy most factory that any other brand. My local walmart has had the 100 bulk federal packs for under 27.99 when they have em, tula brass factory can be had for 12$/50 when in stock, and Cabela's has PPU JHP factory rounds that are NICE for 18.99/50 here locally when they have it in stock.

Plus like its been said, brass is pretty easy to come buy due to so many LEO's using the caliber, seems that any range they are at they leave METRIC tons of the stuff laying around.

$25/thousand is being sold by Heavy Metal Molds. They can get 4,000 in a box. Good stuff...charlie
