I am technically challenged but would love to see pictures and the stories of your 'sporterised' milsurps. I know this was very popular years ago when things were different. I'm a sucker for these low dough gems.

I also like converted military rifles and I own several. A couple are very nicely done and a couple are true Bubba creations. I only have one that is completely my Bubba rifle. It started out as a beat up Spanish Mauser. I cleaned up the action, made the bolt handle out of an old wrench, a friend swapped out the barrel for a Midway 35 Whelen using home made barrel and action wrenches, I rented a finish reamer and finish reamed the chamber, I rust blued the thing, sights are from a Remington 700 and the stock was a black mystery stock from Gunbroker that turned out OK I think. Almost forgot, recoil pad is from an H&R Handi Rifle.

May be a bubba gun to some people, but I like it.

I'll post pics of the others when I get a chance.

I wouldn't call that bubba'ed, that's a very nice custom sporting rifle. Excellent work.

One thing I like about true Bubba'ed rifles, is you don't feel any pangs of conscience when you buy one and use it as the basis for a real sporting rifle, or a military like custom job.
A cut down No.5 is a good starting point for a replica of the No.5 carbine.
An altered non restorable No.1 is a good basis for a classic English sporting rifle.

If no milsurp rifles had ever been used to build sporters the value of remaining all correct specimens would be very low indeed. I doubt there would be very many collectors.
It is a shame to see rare models chopped up though.

This is my two-groove with a rust textured boor and very accurate too. I added the carry cord, an item I won't go without. It also has a suppressor-brake I built and fitted. I also made and fitted the scope rail.

This is a true Bubba gun. 1893 Mauser that a guy bought off the internet and then was afraid to fire it when he got it. I bought it real cheap and it is now a sporter in a Boyd's laminated stock with an Adams & Bennet 7X57 barrel on it.
In the one picture the camming area on the bolt is ground off 'cuz Bubba did not know to flatten out the hump so the scope base would set farther forward, the base is trimmed so the bolt handle would go by it.

How do you like the scope?

Leadman,

There is certainly potential. Looks like a great project gun.

Safe shooting,

Thanks for sharing the pictures and info guys. My potential future son in law is a computer geek and says he can teach me how to post a picture. We'll see. I have a few bubba guns. Some shoot pretty good. A chopped up #5 Jungle Carbine for instance that is a darned good hunting rifle, and a '91 Argie that is a pig slayer.

I have some of Mr. Bubba's work.

91204

It seems to me that Bubba is an aspiring wood carver.

91205

To top off his project. He crafted an authentic "Schnabel" forend.

91206

Seriously though. The thing actually doesn't shoot too bad (7.35 cal). The finger grooves in the stock had something that looked like plastic from a 5 gal. bucket glued in them. I gave $69.95 for it (the bore looked good). I cleaned the wood up a little and slathered some cold blue on it, added some swivel studs and called it done. I've carried it around a little and it's light and easy to maneuver in a tree stand.

My best "bubba" rifle; a 6.5 jap. I cleaned the chamber with a 6.5x55 reamer creating a short chambered cartridge and using .308W cases; basically a 6/5-308 with a bit more body taper. Feeds fine and shoots very well which is surprising given the bore's condition. Picture shows a Weaver K4 on it but it's now got a Tasco 4X with post reticle on it.....more appropo.......

Here's another Mosin. Bought it cheap with a horrible stock and dark/pitted bore and thought I'd try out a few ideas. Barrel chopped to 20", bolt "turned" down, homemade safety that blocks sear, and quick and dirty peep sight. This is the rifle that got me into casting bullets and I'm currently working on opening up a Lee mold to .316. Yep, it's ugly but I don't care.

You're right! That's uglier'n a home-made booger riding on a crippled spider.

But it's probably still fun!

The Russians never were into appearance anyways. They cared about function.

As ugly as some of their stuff is, some have made it uglier. But, it still works well.

A 'Cavalry' version 20" bbl I made from a M38 Turk. Shortened bbl, sectioned stock, made the nosecap, shortened the rear sight to carbine length.

My 'Garage' 1903 Sporter. A buddy gave me a barreled action with a stripped action. I bought the already "Sportsterized" '03 scant grip stock and bolt from another friend for $40, and another pal sold me the steel Lyman #57 sight for $25. I had all the other action parts. The black forend tip is loose and the recoil pad is dead as a doornail. It's as ugly as a mud fence, which has it's own appeal, but danged if the thing isn't a shooting essobee! Not bad for $65 :-)

Maybe this one doesn't count as it's all military. All that was done was to replace the worthless 8mm bbl with a military turned stepped 308 barrel. Since it had the wooden handguard I stamped the front receiver ring '308' to identify the chambering.

It's not mine, i saw it on an auction site. But it shoots the classic 11.2x58R, seller asks for 250-ish dollars as a starting price. If it sells for it, heck I might even buy it for the glass.
