There must be an unwritten law that states that the set screw on the locking ring of whichever loading die you are using is always in the back, against the wall and out of sight.

Not as bad as when you go to unscrew the die from the press and your tightening job was as tight as you thought it was

Or when the previous owner of a die that was a bit loose, tightened it with epoxy.

Your problem is that you installed your loading bench backwards......or it goes on the opposite wall.

Actually, Murphy's Law was not originally promulgated by Murphy, but by another guy with the same name...

....the directions didn't say which wall to build the bench again. Dangit mine might be against the wrong wall....:)

Had a job as a framing carpenter, opened a carton of nails and found half of them had the heads on the wrong end. Told the foreman about it and he said, "You idiot, they are for the other side of the house."

Taylor i have the same gremlins! I wonder if your are relatives of mine.
They are so fast. Even in the light if I turn my back to do something they will steal whatever tool I am working with and put it some where else, and many times under something else. And I can never catch them in the act.
Does someone make a replant to keep them away?

Easy fix,
set your die and gently tighten the lock ring, take a small dab of wax ( bullet lube works ) and press it into the top junction of the lock ring and the die, this will hold the two parts together. Then gently loosen the die so the set screw presents itself to you and tighten it.
DONE.

Graywolf, why would you want to present a simple solution to a highly complicated problem? Think of the engineers out of work in these times. GW

Graywolf, I bet you're one of those people who push the shopping cart back to the store entrance when you're done thereby taking a much needed job away from the guy trying to make an honest living rounding up the carts in the parking lot.

Shame on you!

I would take the lock ring off and turn it over and screw it back on the die and see if that will bring the set screw more towards the front. It has to do with where the thread starts vs where the hole for the set screw was drilled. It admit it works enough for me that I will try it but sometimes it does nothing.

I can supply small amounts of old stinky bullet lube that I scraped off some targets. [smilie=s:
But you have to pay the postage. :kidding:
I hate shopping carts, I push them no more than I have to. [smilie=s:

I have so much lost stuff around here I can't believe it. What really gets me is you would think that when I was looking for something lost I would find some of the other stuff that has been lost for years. Taylor your right about those Gremlins.

I'm very familiar with that guy Murphy. He was a frequent visitor in the assembly plant I worked in. I had kind of forgotten about him since I retired.

He gets real upset when you don't acknowledge his works, that explains some recent happenings in the reloading/casting room.:( I think his antics will be reduced when I finish the clean-up I just started.) But maybe it will make it easier for him to attack!?[smilie=1: Hmmmmm, maybe that wasn't a good idea.

I searched for a .357 seating die I KNEW I had, just to find it 3 days later HIDING IN PLAIN SITE!

I hate it when my stuff takes off into that other dimension and comes back when i don't need it,
or I forgot what I wanted it for.

No problem Taylor. I love the sympathy and the humor. I do think gray wolf could have made us a video of that rather complicated procedure he outlined using all those technical terms that I no comprendo.

Your setup is fine, it's your house that's backward. Turn that around and you'll be good to go.

Just buy Lee dies, no set screws to worry about, just variable OALs and partially resized brass.

Taylor, I think Tennessee is more in alignment with the north pole than Kalifornia. My wife is from South Fulton, very close to Dixie Gun Works. I should also point out that my father was born in your fair state. Truly, Gods country.
