Anyone have any idea how difficult it is to turn a Savage 270 into a 35 Whelen? Midway USA has the Adams & Bennet barrel, plus the proper barrel wrenches and Go/No go gauges. I have just never attempted anything like this before, but with all the talk of 35 caliber boolits on this forum, I may NEED  to try one. Besides, many years have I longed for a Whelen.

I like this board !! I just got back from the club shooting mine. It's not a big deal to chang barrels at all I swapped mine from06 to 35whelan last night bcause my middle girl and me cast some ly 358315 Thanksgiving day and she wanted to shoot em,The only thing from 270win to 35 Whelan is the 35 has a magnumn contour so you will have to open the stock up , up front they are the same dia for about 5 or 6 in thats all that I bed mine, you will also see the indents on the barrel nut in bedding compound it will have to be smoothed because it wont likely index the sma spot on both barrels. You will notice when you getthe barrel off and new one on that there is very little clearance between the rear of the barrel and the bolt face I use a piece of electricl tape on the bolt face and a touch of wax on the tape and snug the barrel up to the bolt then tighten the nut . It may not sound to technical but it works very reliably and repeatable. I have 25/06,30/06,35Whelan, and I rarely have to move the scope more than 3 or 4 in to rezero:)

I have found some information about swapping Savage rifle barrels. Here are some sources that I found useful.

Very thorough FAQ on a Savage Barrel Swap web site:

Less detailed barrel change procedure:

Some general Savage rifle technical details:

A subscription-based site, this is probable the mother lode of Savage rifle knowledge:

.35 Whelen? Eh...

A .375 Whelen... now yer talkin'...

I love swapping out the barrels on my Savage 7mm. All you need is a vice, a barrel wrench (Midway sells 'em), and an empty casing to set it to...

There are outfits that will rebore a barrel for a lot less than buying a new one, allowing you to retain all the original markings, as long as your muzzle diameter will allow for this. Many years ago, I had an old Aydt Schuetzen rifle in 8.15x46, with a badly pitted octagon barrel, bored out to .338. I gave it to Charlie Dell, of Christiansburg VA, an old friend and fellow schuetzen shooter, who's since passed away, and he sent it out. You should be able to check with the ASSRA for information, or maybe a schuetzen bulletin board.

I have a long and a short Savage, and niether have their first barrel swap still on. What I had happen on one of them got me to split the barrel nut to remove it, after stripping a barrel wrench. That first removal will require all the tools but after that just the wrench and a hammer that delivers dead blows will take them apart, just use an anti-seize compound.
I don't add anyting to make "extra headspace", just run the barrel down on a sized case (with the lug and nut), tightening the barrel nut tensions the headspace to about .003".
The trick is getting once fired brass, then resizing it in your own equipment.
