I know there are quite a few more of you out there this year making your own bullets. Let's have another fun competition!

(Moderators, if we could keep this thread here in the swaging forum, as it pertains to the swaged bullet shooting crowd, I will post a reference in the "our town" forum directing anyone interested here. Thanks)

I welcome everyone and anyone to participate. For those of you that do not swage your own yet or don't have a complete set of dies yet projectiles/bullets are available at no cost in one lot of 50 bullets. Joe Christensen has graciously donated 2 lots of 50 bullets and I will have several packs of bullets to donate soon.

Please let us all know the extent of this up coming years shoot with a simply reply stating you wish to participate. All entries will be allowed up to the date posted for the end of this shoot. You do not have to reply with a "count me in" but it will be fun to know how many we have completing. You can still participate even after the start date has passed so long as you submit your target postmarked on or before last day of shoot.

Start date: January 1st 2014

End date: March 31th 2014

These dates should give you all plenty of opportunity for tuning a good load, making some bullets or holding out for a good weather weekend.

Simple rules here, anything goes so long as the bullet you are shooting is made from 22lr, 22mag or 17 HMR brass.

Scoring will be simple. We are all grouped into the same category, doesn't matter if your shooting a $10K bench gun or $300 wallmart special. We will shoot two 5 shot groups on the target posted below. Both groups will be graded for score and group size. Perfect "score" would be 100 (2 groups of 5 shots each all in the 10 ring). Tie breaker would be the number of "X" rings (the smallest center circle) hit. "Group" score should be pretty self-explanatory, total the group size in inches of both targets combined. Two .25" groups would equal a total group score of .500" simple!

Only one piece of target paper will be submitted for scoring so both your groups must be on the same piece of paper. Targets will be sent to my PO address and must be post marked on or before the last day of shoot. I will post pics of all targets submitted and results for the match. Shooters are encouraged to include as much data as possible regarding the bullets and loads used, example... powder brand, grains, bullet weight, gun, barrel length, twist, fps, scope weather conditions, manufacture of die set, etc. Shooters are also encouraged to post pictures of their progress with target pics.

Remember this is all for fun and seeing just what can be done with home made bullets made from scrap brass. The more pics and info we can gather here the more interesting, exciting and helpful it will be to all of us making our own bullets now or will be in the future!

Simple prizes will be awarded to best groups/scores. A drawing will be held for more substantial items. I'll donate one of my one step dies (40 or 44 caliber winners choice) or $225 "store credit" towards any of my products, to be given away to winner of random drawing, same as last year.

I still have a few of the donated items left over from the last shoot and will be looking for any additional donations for this years shoot. Please post if you have anything you wish to donate for prizes.

Here are the rules of the shoot.

In short this is a compition for any caliber bullet made from 22lr, 22mag or 17HMR cases for jackets using any set of dies.

RULES AND DETAILS

Distance = 100yrds

Caliber = your choice

Fire arm = anything goes, bolt action, varmint/target rigs, hunting riffle, pistol, semi auto, scoped, open sights, All will be clasified into same catigory.

Rests = Sure! The only thing we are grading is the target, feel free to shoot off hand if that is what you shoot best.

Bullet/projectile = has to be swaged using 22lr/22mag/17hmr cases for jackets. Jackets can be trimmed. Any weight or style bullet is good to go. No commercial jackets or bullets or bullets made from jackets drawn from copper strip or cups. . Can be bullets you made or made by others. Can be made from any set of dies you wish. For those that do not swage bullets yet, simply post your interest here and we will figure out how to get you some bullets to load. Swagers are not allowed to profit from this fun shoot by attempting to sell bullets they made unless they have legal FFL-06 licence. Shooters are responsable for the safty of the loaded round. No liability should fall on the swager that made the projectiles.

Loaded ammo = Obviously has to be reloaded and not necessarily by the shooter. No factory ammo.

Eligibility = anyone can send in target. Encourage relitives, spose, friends, the more the better.

Target =You can simply print the target pictured below from the following link. The target is located about half way down the page. Make sure you are using the same target as pictured below with 2 targets on same page!http://www.accurateshooter.com/shooting-skills/targets/

Consider the .5" target the X ring and the 1" circle the 10 ring and so on.

http://i636.photobucket.com/albums/uu87/BTSniper/target2_zpsb214e679.png (http://s636.photobucket.com/user/BTSniper/media/target2_zpsb214e679.png.html)

I will have a transparent overlay of the outer rings that are covered by the bold square so accurate scoring can be determined.

Let me know if you guys have any questions or concerns. You all have 3 months to turn in a target. Might sound like a long time but I remember the last shoot went by pretty quickly. Please let us all know if you wish to participate and pass on the invite to anyone you might think would like to participate. I'll be turning in a target for certain yet I'll consider myself ineligible for the awards.

Good shooting and swage on!

Brian

This will give you an idea of scoring for these targets. I simply imposed the X and numbers to the target on the left. The target on the right is how it appears after printing from the site. You can pencil the X and numbers into your target if you wish.

If a bullet "breaks" the line of the target the higher score is awarded.

One more thing NO SIGHTERS all holes in paper will be scored. There should be no more then ten bullet holes in the entire piece of paper! There should be no less then 10 holes (obviously small groups have the potential of putting bullets threw same hole, this will be obvious in the small nature of the size of the group) unless you wish to submit a target in which you had one bullet miss target all together (a target submitted with less then 10 holes, an obvious miss, will add 11" to your total group size per missed shot. That brings up an interesting potential..... if a bullet comes apart before reaching the target..... So long as there is no evidence of "shrapnel" hitting the target go ahead and shoot again. No one will know anyways, but if you have small shrapnel holes in your target from a bullet blowing up before it reaches the target then your target is void! This is a pretty far stretch of odds here but I have seen it happen where a bullet comes apart before reaching the target and it "peppers" the target with very small holes. This should challenge the shooter to fine tune his loads to prevent bullets from coming apart before they reach the target.

Yes but we added the "score" to this years shoot. Both targets will be judged for smallest group and best score. Perfect score is 100 and I bet we get some combined groups approaching under 1". Different target this year too.

I feel my rifles give me an unfair advantage, so I won't be in for any prizes. Bragging rights alone is good enough for me.

That keeps it fair for the rest of you.

And, Gunnut, you'll want that Savage.

Here's some of the better rifles in the stable.

Joe, it isn't an issue of bullet making. Hell, I KNOW some of them are better than me.

Few come up to my experience making ammo, but heck, most people didn't know that.

Am I THAT good? No, I don't think so. But, I am for sure better than average. Don't believe me. Others know this. I'm not bragging, no sir. But, I do know what my experience is. And, I do know what the rifles I have are capable of.

And, Joe, you just might be underestimating me.

Trying to shame me doesn't work either. Takes a big ego to get goaded into it. I don't have a big ego.

Putting up a donation is fair, though. I'm retired, but I think I can afford something. What would be good? New brass?

One of the reasons I host these shoots is for us to show others the potential of these home made bullets we make from scrap 22lr brass. There are many shooters out there skeptical of the potential accuracy that can be obtained from our "scrap" bullets. I wish to show them that these bullets we make from 22lr brass is every bit as capable of the accuracy they are used to seeing from commercial bullets.

I say bring on your best rigs. Doesn't matter the cost high or low, doesn't matter the shooter's reputation, doesn't matter previous shooting matches won or lost, I want to show everyone that these bullets are capable of some very good accuracy and for the person capable of shooting these bullets under .5 MOA and approaching .25 or better I say you have made some darn good bullets from this "scrap brass." I'm sure everyone will be more then happy to see that person take home a simple prize.

Prizes for winners are simple. Last year we had Small flat rate boxes of 22lr brass offered, $25, small flat rate box of 223 brass, small box of lead, etc. simple stuff kept under or around $25 in value I guess.

I'll post an offered prize list on the third post of this thread as well as a list of those interested.

In my opinion I feel we are testing these bullets just as much if not more then the gun or shooter. We had two groups posted last year that went .5 or less. I welcome all shooters be it small or large groups, I would love to see two 5 shot groups both under .5 or approaching .25.

I don't have any "benchrest" guns but I am putting a 223rem together on a savage action with a Pac-nor 3 groove I have yet to try out. Should be about 18-20lbs when I get her all together. I feel my stock Savage model 12 is capable of great groups if I do my part. Even got a 6mmBR with a Shilen barrel on it that I have some bullets loaded up made from 17 HMR brass. Should be plenty of competition yet still have a lot of fun. I say bring on the small groups, show everyone what these bullets can do or just have fun shooting and post some targets for us all to enjoy.

Good shooting and swage on!

It's possible you could, just not overly likely. 2 of those rifles weigh just a couple of ounces short of 10 pounds (Hunter and Varmint Hunter class, far right 2), Remington 700 and 722. One weighs a hair under 10 1/2 pounds (Light Varmint class, 2nd from left), Remington 40X action. The big one on the left weighs about 30 pounds (Heavy Bench class), Remington 722. The other 2 are in the 13 1/2 pound class (Heavy Varmint), sleeved Remington 700s. The 2 Heavy Varmint rifles are getting retired from my use, getting passed on to family members to start them out. Replacing them with rifles getting built, one will use a Hart A10 action, the other a Remington 40X.

I came fairly close to breaking a record at 200 with that Light Varmint rifle about 25 years ago, at a match, group was .204", and wasn't the best one shot that match either. It had a different barrel and scope then, it was a 22 PPC. It's a 222 Rem now. And that is probably the rifle I will use. Shoots under .25" groups at 100 quite routinely.

Beat me with a factory rifle, even a factory varmint rifle, two things will happen. First, I'll congratulate you for having done it. Second, I'll invite you to come join me at shoots. IBS has a somewhat informal class for factory rifles. But, if you seriously beat me and that rifle, and it isn't a fluke, you ought to be good enough to shoot Hunter or Varmint Hunter competition with it, and do well.

Welcome! No need to buy the bullets. Simply post a request here "I'm in" and that you are in need of some bullets to shoot in the match and we will provide you with some. Typically I send 50 bullets out to those that wish to participate but do not make their own.

To those swagers that are able to provide a few bullets simply let us know or contact those in need. No money is to change hands unless seller/swager has FFL-06 license. Those that contribute bullets for the shoot are doing so to promote the growth of our sport and many thanks go out to those of you offering up a few bullets to those that wish to participate.

It can be very gratifying to the swager when another shoots well with bullets he made.

I have 1,000 of our 22 cal swaged bullets on the way to shoot myself or distribute to those that wish to participate. I expect them at my door by middle of January. I'll ship them out in 50 bullet packs to anyone that wishes to participate in this postal shoot. I don't get much time anymore to make my own. These 1,000 bullets are being provided to me from a customer with my die set. He is starting up a bullet business. Here is a shameless plug for his business.

For those of you that think your rifles are "too nice", the challenge is not in the rifle. Making bullets from spent 22LR brass that are capable of sub MOA accuracy is the challenge. This is were the rubber meets the road. I was using a rifle capable of 1/10th MOA accuracy using commercial jackets, but had trouble getting the bullets made from 22LR brass to group much better than an inch. The closest to center shot was really interesting.

Lets see what you guys have.

Well here is just a taste. I just through some loads together just to see what my 55grs and the Savage could do- first target on the left shot just before the wind went stupid - and I mean stupid gusting from 30 mph first from the left then from the right! Yea it push the one shot all the way into first target. Just shot off sand bags on the tailgate. I'll do prone when it dry's up some- kinda swampy around here right now. Put together a 223rem on a savage action, threaded a Pac-nor 3 groove barrel on it and took it out today to see if it will shoot. Bought the barrel used and was told it has 1800+ rounds threw it. Looking threw the barrel the first 1/4" - 1/2" of the lands are worn flat. I put my tried and true load of a 52 grain Sierra Match King loaded with 27 grains of H-335 and a Wolf 223 primer, I know commercial bullets....me! it is my "control" load for which I judge my home made bullets against.

Backed up to 100 yrds, got it sighted in and put 5 rounds into our official postal shoot target.... I would say she still has some life in her!

For scoring figures that would be a 49 1X and group was about .4". I settled in behind the gun and the last three shots went into that hole at 9 o-clock. I'll keep the small neon stickers off my official targets. Now that I know the gun can shoot I'll be putting some of my swaged bullets threw her very soon! I'm curious to see if the 3 groove lands will be easier on our fragle bullets vs conventional 4 or 6 groove barrels.

Only 3 more days till start of shoot!

Here was a group I shot today from a Savage 22-250 12 twist loaded with 35 grains of RL-15 and my home made 52 grain rebated boat tail bullets. This load shows some potential. The far bullet hole to the right was a little interesting, it showed signs of expansion (?) or smoke, lead splatter on the paper? Maybe it just hit a hard spot on the plywood backstop? anyway the other 4 went under 1" I'll have to adjust the scope but for scoring practice this one group would have scored 29

52 grain Sierra Match king next to my 52 grain rebated boat tail bullets. Notice the 9s ogive of my bullets, 6s may work better with boat tails and the short 22lr jacket.

And, BT, any ideas on what caliber brass I should provide?

I intend it to be new brass, I have a fair amount on hand, various calibers. So, a list might be in order. Or, I could give a choice of a few calibers.

BT Sniper
12-29-2013, 02:21 AM
a choice to the winner would probably be good, otherwise I would suggest something in 22 cal :) probably 223 rem as it seems most of use are shooting 223s. Up to you, your donation and participation is much appreciated.

Good idea. Sadly, I have no new 223 on hand. I do other calibers.

So, choice of caliber, within a few .224 calibers it shall be.

222 Rem, 222 Rem Mag and 22-250 are definitely 3. Got some other calibers, but not enough quantity to be worth it.

Yeah I have been tempted to try the CFE 223 too but figure I'll stick with the H-335 a bit longer. Those two targets above where not mine :) though I have high expectations from those shooters the targets do belong too.

I do plan to try some Viht-133 though.

Any caliber rifle, or pistol for that matter, so long as the bullet is made from 22lr, 22mag or 17 HMR brass

Here is what I put down in post #1 of this thread. In the future I may host a pistol caliber shoot for the bigger 40s, 44s, 45s and other various calibers made from brass cases.

Here are the rules of this postal shoot.

In short this is a compition for any caliber bullet made from 22lr, 22mag or 17HMR cases for jackets using any set of dies.

RULES AND DETAILS

Distance = 100yrds

Caliber = your choice

BT Sniper

No one is "too late" not till April 1st anyway. The deadline for participating in this shoot is March 31st.

Yes we have a couple members here (myself included) that are able to provide shooters with one pack of 50 of these bullets made from 22lr brass (projectiles not loaded rounds).

For anyone that wishes to participate simply state your request with a reply in this thread of "I'm in" or similar and that you require some bullets. Do also review the first three posts of this thread for all the details.

I'll sign you up and get you on the list to receive some bullets.

I don't need any 22 projectiles.
besides the leftovers (about 50) I received from you last year, I did a trade with "MUSTANG", My 32acp brass for some his 60 gr Home swaged 22's
I'm actually looking forward to see what my CZ will do with a 60gr. Jword.

BUT, I will add...
If someone swages any 243,
I'd love to try some of those, around 90gr.
I have a heavy Custom Mauser Benchrest gun...which has a long leade, so I need a heavy bullet...it's a tack driver with most commercial jwords.

Spent the last three days behind the press and out at the range. I got to admit this postal shoot has gotten me out of the house and having fun shooting when I would typically be inside.

Here are a couple targets to give you guys and idea of how we are scoring the shoot this year.

Of course as I have mentioned we are scoring targets for both "group" size and "score."

Here is a look at the standard target. I added the numbers to give you all an idea for the "score"

http://i636.photobucket.com/albums/uu87/BTSniper/ef273fbd-4372-40dd-a2d8-35c1550c0ad2_zps34660ef9.png (http://s636.photobucket.com/user/BTSniper/media/ef273fbd-4372-40dd-a2d8-35c1550c0ad2_zps34660ef9.png.html)

here is a target I shot that has a fairly good score yet "challenged" group size. Total score for both targets was 90 points with 1X and total group size for both targets was 3.100"
http://i636.photobucket.com/albums/uu87/BTSniper/012_zps46ee7f6a.jpg (http://s636.photobucket.com/user/BTSniper/media/012_zps46ee7f6a.jpg.html)

and here is a target with great total group size yet challenged total score. Total group size was 1.499" while total score was 74.

http://i636.photobucket.com/albums/uu87/BTSniper/400d24f8-3158-4c73-a10b-1a6ae1e087e3_zpsdd618395.jpg (http://s636.photobucket.com/user/BTSniper/media/400d24f8-3158-4c73-a10b-1a6ae1e087e3_zpsdd618395.jpg.html)

Here is another target with a pretty good score yet 2 "fliers" in each target opened the group size up A LOT! Score was 86 5X with a less then stellar 4.791 group size

Just figured I'd chime in...
I'm interested, and will try to get some bullets on paper. I just haven't committed, since I still haven't shot BT's 6mm projectiles from LAST year's shoot.
...and my availability now is worse than it was then.

Just to give you an idea of where I'm at...
In 2013, I cast 0 bullets, swaged 0 bullets, loaded 0 centerfire cartridges (after the failed trip to shoot the 6mms), only took rimfires on the 3 opportunities I had to shoot, and had to dig my dies out of a box and go to a relative's house to load up 8 .444-410 shotshells (and I cut up factory .410 shotshells to do it :().

When I do get a chance to shoot, I'll probably also have an "illegal" .44 caliber submission ... for the fun of it.

Well shot my first target today. Not bad considering I had a fair amount of wind- started out at about10-15 but by the time I put up the second target it was blowing 20 25. I shot one round on the second an knew it was useless to continue. Scored 81 with 1.698", 1.668" groups. Going to seat the next load out some to get the bullets closer to the lans which should shrink the groups. Definately going to wait for a nice calm day as well.

These are the first bullets I have seen in person that were swaged from 22 LR brass. It looks like he used Remington 22LR brass. I am impressed with the quality of these bullets. I will load up my first group of loads Sunday for the match.

I am going to try these 60 grain 0.224" bullets out of my 223 BLR. The barrel doesn't say what twist rate but I'm guessing 1-12". I shoot great groups with 50 grain V-Max.

Thanks again Mustang. I'll be sending you some of my 320 grain Lee REAL boolits for your 50 cal.

93853

And moving on to the .223 brass. Did not need heavy duty taping job.

As they say in the movies: It's a wrap! ( ... of the 2 flat rate boxes)
93854

93855

Interior box corners protected with folded cardboard; purpose is to minimize shifting of the inner boxes. Not too bad for this package, but a shift of an inner box filled with 50+lb can do serious damage to the USPS Flat Rate box (they are not that strong).
93856

The gift is ready to go; it has company: 50+lb box of lead. So, they can nestle together this evening!

All set to go in the morning!

one more week of work and I'll be off for a bit, if the weather cooperates, I'll be at the range many times in February :) I have more of the bullets (that you gave me Brian) loaded into 223 from Last year, than I recall...must be 75 or so :)

I know the feeling.

I managed to get my reloading benches into the basement yesterday, in hopes that I could get prepared to load up after finishing the test loads from last year (and I need to load 5-6 rounds that were 'wasted' last year in nasty weather).
But... the cold weather is a bit of a non-motivator. The best range for me to test these loads at, is in the bottom of a river gorge, between two sweeping plains. When the wind isn't ripping through there, you have all of the cold air settling in the bottom. So, it's 30-45 mph winds, or -2F to -10F.

No, I haven't. But, if I was going to drive that far for a range, I'd head (even farther) to the free public range in Soda Springs. Great range - just a bit of a drive for me (~1 hour each way).

Well finally got a chance to work up and shoot a group with bullets BT sniper provided. Following his advice on not loading them hot I worked up a load using BT's 53gr projectiles over very light load of CFE223 23.7gr in sorted LC brass and CCI magnum primers. First test group of initial load work up printed three shots right at an inch. So I loaded up 27 bullets, left after the load work up, and headed to the range.
Here is the rifle that those bullets where flying out of

http://i149.photobucket.com/albums/s70/JeePing03/IMG_8352.jpg (http://s149.photobucket.com/user/JeePing03/media/IMG_8352.jpg.html)

The main concern was the long 28 inch barrel with a 1 and 7 twist rate, I had to keep velocity down so as not to explode the little buggers. I didn't bother to chrono the loads because I knew from previous experience with 52 gr A maxs that those bullets will be somewhere in the neighborhood of 2650fps. Which is plenty fast to punch a hole in a paper.

Here is what I got:

http://i149.photobucket.com/albums/s70/JeePing03/IMG_0876.jpg (http://s149.photobucket.com/user/JeePing03/media/IMG_0876.jpg.html)

Group on the left was fired first on a cold barrel. After seeing that performance I immediately fired the second group on the right. From the looks of it those bullets liked it when the barrel warmed up a bit and it shows. Group tightened up except for the dang 4th shot where it hit at 12 o'clock of X ring, that little bugger opened it up.

At this point the dang wind picked up and I decided to let the barrel cool of a bit and grabbed my 308 to make the time go faster. After about 30 or so minutes of ringing steel plates with 168 gr projectiles, wind has calmed down enough for me to resume my target shooting.

Fired second 10 shot string. Again left side is the first five shots which mimic performance of the first target. Not wasting any time fired the group on the right which again had the dang 4th shot open up the group.

http://i149.photobucket.com/albums/s70/JeePing03/IMG_0875.jpg (http://s149.photobucket.com/user/JeePing03/media/IMG_0875.jpg.html)

All in all those bullets shot outstanding. I cannot believe how well they printed for being hand pressed. I get similar performance with 55gr FMJs by hornady.

BT sniper I cannot decide which target is a best one so I'll just mail both of them in and I trust you will pick the better one for the score.

Although extending the deadline is an attractive suggestion, I think a 3 month window is plenty. If you push things out too far, it can make the early entrants feel cheated.

I think a better alternative would be talking some of the prize donors into using their donations for a "Spring Postal Shoot". (Say, April 1st to June 30 -- or even just a 45-60 day window.) It gives all shooters some different weather to work with, and lets the guys less-than-stellar winter shooting locations have a chance to get out in at least the mud and rain. (Or after their fair weather ranges/clubs open back up.)

Spring time is when most of us are rearing to go, anyway.

Nice shooting, who's SWAGE dies are you using?

I used Corbin dies and "S" Press for these bullets. I still have the dies, but no longer have a press. :(

But it was the process that I learnt from a bulletsmith, Cluade, in France that made the difference in my bullets. I was able to pick his brain on how he did things when he builds his for competition. 10 shots under 1/2 minute with open sights at 100m/109yds. Mine were running 1-1 1/2 minutes no matter what I did till he corrected a few things.

Living here in the wind surfing capital of the US I consider any day the wind isn't blowing a good day for shooting. That being said I feel the greatest challenge for me to get a good group for the postal shoot isn't the temp or the amount of snow or even the rain here in the NW but that darn wind! I do think the 3 month time period for this postal shoot should allow for everyone to submit a target in plenty of time with the chance for a good day of shooting. I'm still up for comments, yet at this time the March 31st deadline still stands. I'll certainly take considerations into account for next years shoot.

Again great shooting Algun! We'll look forward to those "few things" of correct that equal small groups on paper :)

Look forward to seeing more target pics. I got some 22-250, 223rem and 6mmBR rounds loaded up just waiting for a calm day and may actually have some .204 rounds ready in time too.

Target shot today and ready to send in to BT tomorrow. It was a lot of fun and sadly, my results wont scare anyone. Oh well. I didn't handle a crosswind as well as I would like and I need to work on my load development. This is part of the fun of shooting. Anyway, on one target I had 1 (8), 2 (7) and 2 (6) rings for a 35 pt total and a 1.669 spread. The second round gave me 1 (X) and 4 (8) rings for a total of 42 and a 1.830 spread.

This is a great way for me to have a baseline on which to improve my shooting. This was shot with a Savage Model 11, Pentax 4.5x14 glass, 55gr swaged bullets, BT dies, CCI primers, and 24.0 gr WC 844 powder.

Good luck to all shooters and thank you to BT and the rest of the sponsors for this postal shoot.

I lost my ammo!
I went to pack everything up for this weekend, and..... All of the ammo I had loaded with BT Sniper's 6mm bullets, for last year's shoot (and general testing) is missing.
I don't know how. I don't know when. All I know is that I packed it in one of my ammo cans when I moved to the house we just bought, and now it's MIA. I have the ammo can - just not any of the 6mm ammo that was in it. :x

So, I'll have to hope and prey that the load I shot 0.75" with last year in the wind works well enough to get the job done with the 25 or so bullets I have left.
The only reference I have to that load is "39.0 gr IMR 4064 ... about 0.020 off the lands" in a previous post. I can make some assumptions about other components, since the wildcat only uses two particular lots of R-P brass, has a dedicated lot of Winchester LR primers, and has a dedicated lot of IMR 4064; but the rest will be educated guesstimates.

I think it'll work out..... maybe.

Well, it's a target.
The rifle can do better.
The bullets can do better.
The load can probably do better.
The problem was definitely the shooter.
...But I'm still going to blame the wind.

The target is on its way (minus orange stickers). I dropped it at the post office at about 5 pm on Saturday, so it should have been on the 8 o'clock truck to Boise.

It isn't obvious in the photo, but in person you can see that the right hand target has a double-tap on the X ring. The oblong-looking hole on the right is just an illusion caused by shadows when I took the picture.

Target is in the mail. No point in turning in something sooner than required. Tried getting another shot Sunday but forty mile an hour winds with 60 + mph gusts made it unacceptable for keeping a stand up let alone sending rounds down range.

Oh well, two groups at less than .7 inches a piece, not bad. There's always next year.

I put my target in the mail today as well, weather today was better than its been but still had to deal with 20 mph winds. Groups were OK but I had done zero load development with these bullets and had not dialed down my scope so was shooting a little right. Oh we'll maybe better next year, I would really like to participate in a shoot like this during better shooting season, after all if we are trying to show others what we can do with these swaged bullets why would we pick the absolute worse time of the year to shoot. Don't get me wrong I think we should still have a winter shoot but also a summer/fall shoot.

Got it mailed. I wish that I had more time to work on the load but it has been improving. The real surprise was that my BVSS is not liking these bullets and it is a laser with the commercial bullets. Instead this was shot with a Savage Edge, you know the top of the line one! I had to do a little trigger work and try again today. The group on the left was first. :D The one on right was a little disappointing. Shot one more target and each group opened more. The gun is fairly new (<200 rnd) so I should probably be cleaning the barrel a little more. Overall I am happy with the way things are working out. The initial shotgun pattern was a little scarey but things are looking better. Maybe next match I will improve enough to win a hand full of mixed headstamp .22 shells! Can't wait to see the results.

If that happens....
I'd really like to see some kind of postal shoot that's open to all swaged bullets - not just rimfire hull jacketed bullets.

I think there are a lot of members here swaging 6mm, 7mm, .30 cal, .35 cal, .44 cal, etc that would love to post some targets. Even if it does work out as "match bullet" versus "it's cheap and good enough", I think it could be fun.

Maybe I should see about running one myself. ;-)

The match adds a fun factor but a simple thread requesting your best target for Jan-Mar or such for cal .24-.31 might work. Separate thread for pistol vs rifle and groups of calibers. It is interesting to see others results to rate your own progress. Seeing some groups fired with match quality pills and guns would be interesting even though it is unlikely I will go that direction.

It will take me a little while but things are looking good.

Here is a look at what the scanned and scored targets will look like. I scanned these in on a scanner, used the ruler to scale everything exactly the same and used "on target" software to do all the scoring with. I selected "target info" and the software combined the group size of both groups then divided by two to get the "max spread" MOA score. In the case of the first target posted below the max spread average of the two targets was 1.200". That is a 1.473" group on the left and a .927" group on the right. 1.473 + .927 = 2.400 / 2 = 1.200" for the group score. The soft ware makes it easy for me and I'll post targets as pictured below in no particular order.

Thanks

Brian

Everything is going smoothly. I initiated contact with those that offered prizes to contact those of you that have selected their offered donations. If you don't hear back from them by end of week feel free to give them a friendly heads up but do be courteous as I imagine, like may of us vendors here, they may be very busy.

I want to be sure to give a big thanks to all our vendors and other members that have generously donated prizes for this years postal shoot. Do be sure to pass on a good word for those of you soon to be receiving these great prizes. OK guys.... here is the same list of all the shooters that submitted a target entry for the prize drawing! I will be using the same random.org site that I used last year to generate the winning numbers from the 17 listed here. The first winner selected will get his choice of the 3 prizes available for the drawing and so on for the next two selected drawing winners.

I am in the process of video recording the results now and will have the video of the three selected winners posted shortly............

2. BUTTERNUTZ
3. ALGUNJUNKIE
4. LIZZARD333

Ok I go the winning numbers. Just waiting for the video to upload to photobucket.

Here it is the video of the 3 random chosen winner for this years drawing.

Photobucket upload seemed a bit slow. I also uploaded it to my youtube page. Youtube will probably have better results for quick and quality viewing. You can click the link below for the you tube video or click on the picture to get the photobucket video.

Give all the shooters a day before we post the winning numbers in the open thread that goes for you winners too. Give everyone the anticipation of watching the video to find out the results too :)

Here is the link to the youtube video. Probably faster then trying to watch it on the photobucket link.

here you can click on the photo to view the same video posted at photobucket

Well I suppose it has been a day.......

Winners

#1
#10
#2

You may have been able to hear my surprise from the numbers chosen, that #1 and #2 would come up but it is a random draw.

#2 (butternutz) is our gratuitous donor of the PID unit and is the third person to choose, he may get the opportunity to win a great looking PID unit at which point we shall see what he decides to do.

Congrats to the three shooters. Go ahead and post your choices starting with NHRifle, then FWest and last Butternutz.

Here is a look at the prizes again. We have a 40cal swage die (or $225 store credit), a PID unit and a press stand.

Drawing

We now have three substantial prizes for the drawing. This means three lucky competitors will win one of these great prizes no matter their results of the shoot!

All that send in a target are eligible for the drawing.

First chosen winner of drawing gets choice between my die set (or store credit) and this new prize. Second winner of the drawing will get whichever one is left.

Our local vendor sponsor "BetterNutZ" of CompeteCast inc. has offered one of his very cool looking digital lead pot temperature controllers. This is a $185 value! Wish I was eligible for this one.

Check it out!

Our local vendor "1in9twist" of Inline Fabrication inc. has donated a cool "ultra mount" available to fit several different presses. http://inlinefabrication.com/collections/ultramounts Check his site for many more very cool products!

BTSniper improved CH40 cal one step die or $225 "BTSniper store credit" donated by myself to be auctioned off in a drawing to all that send in a target.

It was a great shoot. I'll put on another one next year. Till then I think we will try and get the "bragging rights" shoot going.
