Friend has a Handi in 223 SN 1554xx. Has problems with misfires with Fed bulk ammo Rem and Hornady work fine. He doesn't want to bother with figuring out why.

What would be a fair price? Its like new, a few 100 rds shot. Blue, the barrel is tapered not a bull.

What other barrels will fit this frame. I know there are several different frames. Do you need to send back to H&R to fit other barrels? Fairly ignorant about Handis. Would want a barrel for deer hunting also.

Thanks in advance, Rod

If its the standard H&R Handi (non varmint) they go about $300 for a combo with a cheap simmons scope. Honestly id go $100 bucks without any scope and a six pack of beer.

Might sound like a rude price but if he were to sell it to a pawn shop that's what he would get. Also with the apparent problem might be an easy fix but could be a difficult fix. But atleast from what it sounds he rather get rid of quickly than sit on it.

It is 2 years old bought new, is it safe to assume it is a SB2 frame?

I'll check before swapping money for gun, just to figure out value.

SN is CBA 1544xx didn't have prefix CBA The C shows it is SB2 I think. At least I can get a 45-70 barrel among others.

So it wont shoot some of the cheap stuff but the few others he tried work fine. Maybe he just doesn't like the rifle, his loss your gain.

You are supposed to send them back to H&R if you want a barrel. I have never seen the barrels sold anywhere except ebay. Not sure the difference between a Rossi, where they will sell barrels no problem, and H&R which blow up if they don't bless them. I picked up a 45-70 barrel for mine off ebay not long ago. Locks up the same as the original barrel.

According to H&R guns should be sent back to them for extra barrels so they can be fitted. A lot of people have fit their own with no problems, myself included. One problem some people have is not using proper follow thru. On an H&R if you release the trigger too soon the transfer bar will drop before the hammer makes contact and you can get a misfire.
If he feels he's having problems I'd say $150 would be a fair starting place. Of course it's always best to get him to name a price first.

Misfires can be almost common for some. Lengthen the firing pin to solve the problem.

I have a .223 and that is a very good deal. You could send it back to H&R/Remington and have them fix the firing pin and get a new barrel/caliber at the same time for that price. Another member just sent his back for firing pin issue and it was a 7 day turn around.

Also gave me about 80rds of his misfires and 60 rds of 30-30 1x.

Great guy.

The most Ive spent on a Handi is $220. That was for a full stock 45/70. Which was only made in 1996.
Yup the wood matched.

Misfires can be almost common for some. Lengthen the firing pin to solve the problem.

It's much easier to file the top step of the hammer. That only rests against the frame anyway but will cause misfires if the step protrudes too far.

the other issue I had with 2 handis is the chambers are a touch long.
When shooting reloads, only neck-sizing the brass cured my FTF, and a
switch to Federal primers.

$100 for a lightly used Handi? Wish I could find a deal like that (as long as its a SB2)!
