I got out to shoot the 86 over the chrony today, the load was 40 grains of IMR 4198 under a 420 grain cast bullet.
The lowest velocity was 1633 fps with 1657 fps being the quickest, the accuracy is very good and isn't too bad on the shoulder considering the crescent buttplate.
After five or six boxes of ammo throught he 86, I have experienced no failures or extraction issues.
For anyone who is considering buying of the new Winchesters, I recommend them over the Remlin any day.
I have friends who bought the Rossi while I bought the Miroku, mine is in my gun locker, theirs is in the mail somewhere in warranty land.
Some don't like to buy foreign rifles, I would rather have a beautifully finished reliable Miroku made Winchester than the junk made Remington 45-70 that goes to the warranty shop more than the hunting field.

An extreme spread of 24 fps is very good. IMR 4198 has good burning consistency and your load does a half decent job of filling the case. I also have a Browning 1886 Saddle Ring Carbine 45-70 with which I am extremely pleased.

I also agree with Bill, the load is a little stiff for an original rifle, especially, the Marlin 1881. In addition to the Browning SRC, I also have an original Winchester Model 1886 45-70. My loads are tamer in that one, keeping to original 45-70 ballistics. The Browning, however, can handle a great deal more.

I went the original route and shoot an original 1881 Marlin 45-70 that I rebuilt from a stripped barreled action. It hasn't been to repair shop in 20+ years.
It is 28" barrel. I think your carbine is 22" barrel?
I think your load would be to hot for my gun.
I shoot a lighter boolit 330 grains at 1580 MV FPS.

My Winchester 86 is a 20 inch barrel with the full length mag tube.
