AA1680 or Surplus WC680 in 45-70???

........with cast boolits that is, esp. 300 to 405grainers. Have just seen a little data, at 50 grains plus for 2000FPS+ with j... bullets only. Was hoping to use it with cast boolits in the 1400-1800FPS range, but perhaps it needs more pressure than that, being a double-base powder.

I've had good luck with similar burn rate single-base extruded powders like 4759, 4198 and 5744, but I've go a whole lotta the AAand surplus 680 stuff, that I'd sure like to use up. Never will get through it in small bore applications!-----Thank You, jethrow

I tried some WC680 in my 45-70 BFR.
I had to use the fed 215 primer to get past the squibs.
I did launch some 405's in the 1600-1700fps range from a 10.5" bbl.
I'm sure the pressures were past 40k at least.
so I guess it depends on what your going to shoot it in??

Jethrow: 5744 is a double base powder, originally designed as the explosive in ordanance.

My experience with AA-1680 and CB in other cartridges has not been encouraging. It is a ball powder, and I have never had good results with any of them in reduced loadings where the case is not pretty well filled. The ones I have tried have been very position sensitive. Now, I haven't tried fillers with them, and maybe they will respond well to that.

Since my original post I have noticed that there is data, and book data at that, on similar and somewhat smaller cases from .454 Casull on up!---and at low pressures to boot.

I've shot 10gns WC680 in the 06 for a real nice plinker load. No filler, just went pop and nestled them boolits all together at 25yds.
