Found one online. .... And now it is sold.

Guess I will need to consider a Shiloh.

Thanks

All depends on what you want. The SS version is not common and therefore earns a premium in some peoples' minds.

If the SS is not important to you as a collector or foul-weather hunter, then there are LOTS of blue and walnut 45-70's out there to be had for a lot less money.

too much my friend. i agree with the above sentiment ... unless the stainless is important then i would keep shopping. you should be able to land one used in great condition for around 6 to 800 dollars delivered.

you should be able to buy a new rifle [ brand new] like the one you found for the same or less money.

You are paying a premium for stainless, which does not warrant a premium in my book. Other opinions vary.

Personally, I like blue steel and walnut, but the stainless steel and laminated wood No. 1 rifles are nice too. They are certainly "bullet proof" hunting guns. You'll probably enjoy it.

I like the stainless in .45-70. I owned one for a couple of years and then decided to sell it. A year or more went by and one day I thought to myself that I ought to look for one again. I went to our local gun shop and my old rifle had come in just the day before. I bought it back for pretty much the same price I'd paid when it was new :-)

I got lucky and picked up a blued #1 for $625.00 last month.
It was used but in excellent condition. :D
The 'Great Deal Fairy' has been smiling at me lately.
I've been looking for one in stainless for a couple of years.
I'd be willing to pay that amount if it were in good shape

now THAT is jumping outta the fry pan and into the fire! :drinks: i like your way of thinking and IF you are going to get a Shiloh ... there will be no looking back once you get your grubby mitts on one.

I have to Ruger stainless .45/70 I like it as an all weather hunting rifle, and brush gun.It is lightweight and easy to carry in the thick brush where I tend to hunt.I put a Leupold VX-3 1.5X5 heavy Duplex on it.I can see the reticle all the way till dark.Very handy rifle with great balance.I an currently using The #17 Saeco 350 grain bullet with 43 grains of Rel 7.Never saw a buck worth shooting this season, but the gun seem to like that bullet.

I still love mine and an glad I made the purchase. I believe we have seen the last of the stainless steel #1's .I was told by Ruger that all the internal parts are stainless as well.I feel confident hunting with it in the pouring rain.

well just remember the gun is STAINLESS not rust proof.

Yes stainless will rust and I clean all my stainless guns as I do the blue ones, but I would not hunt with my blued #1 in the rain.Plus I have sealed the inside of the laminated stock so it won't take on water like walnut.I have had stainless guns rust ,but only mild surface rust.

Hot commodity now, The muzzleloader crowd is taking anything on the 45-70 platform and making them into smokeless muzzleloaders. Sabotless and paper patch 600 yard+
