I have an old Ideal tool that is missing the sprue plate, can I make one ?, what metal should I use, was it some type of spring steel?

Any chance of adapting one from another manufacturer? You can get Lyman replacements from Midway for around $6.

I have a 4 cavity that was missing a sprueplate. I swap it with another depending on what I want to cast. Several people make their own. Gianni.

It's fairly easy to make a plate out of thick aluminum sheet or plate. The NRA ran a series of tests on aluminum sprue plates many years ago and found them to be the equal of and often superior to the supplied steel plate. I've made them for a couple of moulds using 3/16 aluminum plate using a hack saw to cut the plate out and an belt sander to shape it and a drill press to make the holes. They really do work well and were easy to make.
