2nd cast bullet harvest this Morning It was 8:30 AM and a great 26 degrees no wind I was just getting ready to crawl from the stand and get ready for work..
had just slid my seat back and laid the gun against the rail ...stretching
cull spike appears moving very slowly quartering left to right at about 67-68 yds ..
slowly pick up my 458 socom loaded with RCBS 45 -300 98/2 alloy powdercoated and sized to 4595..
he looks directly at me
I pull of the trigger and he bounds off about 35 yds and piles up
hit right above the right shoulder and angled down out left side.. dead deer and virtually no meat damage ..

Used to be a Bolt action only hunter... and still strive for 1 shot 1 kill but since all I was hearing was how MSR (modern sporting rifles) were only used for killing people I decided to make it my mission to use versions of AR15's (bigger calibers or course) to hunt with and post pics where I can. To show they can and are quite capable hunting rifles..

deer taken with AR's 6.5 Grendel, 300 Blkout and 458 socom ... last 2 calibers this year with MY cast bullets what a joy !!!!
PS me and the wife love deer meat .. Summer sausage from deer is so good
I usually shoot the cull bucks and does.. got enough trophys

I have no interest in the black rifles personally, but that is a nice deer and a good harvest. My lack in interest in your rifle doesn't mean that it is a poor choice for you. Congrats.

I bet that rifle is loud! Any thoughts on suppressing it? And why is a spike a cull animal? Congrats on your hunt!

yes its loud.. but not as loud as it is with factory loads .. its only running 1583 FPS..
I shoot mostly suppressor guns now and plan on getting one for this rifle in 2014.. its on the list
my 6.5 Grendel running at approx. 2300 FPS with a YHM 308 suppressor I don't even hear shoot out of a box stand.. it might just be I am concentrating so much on the shot but no ear ringing after words.. yes it still has a boom buts its projected way out front
"cull" might have been misused in this case .. I should have said good meat deer

Congrats
As long as his snout is I'd say that needed to come out of the gene pool. I killed one just like it a couple years back. Big body, spikes about 9" long.

While I didn't kill it with a cast boolit I did roll it up on its belly with a dirt bank behind it and shoot it behind the shoulder with my 44 spl just to see how the HP worked. Appeared to work great, had a exit the size of a quarter. I dug the boolit out of the dirt, about 2" deep. Perfect mushroom to the bottom of the cavity. I didn't weigh it but it didn't appear to lose anything. Woody

Agreed he looks a couple years old with puny antlers. Good cull for sure.

What range are you getting on that load? 458SOCOM is on my list.

Congrats and thanks for sharing. Had to look up the 458socom 'cuz I didn't know anything about it. Sounds like a nice big-bore alternative for the AR-15/M4 platform. Brass might be tricky as its fairly new. Oh well.

yes he is my constant companion.. if he would sit still he probably be in the stand with me !

I am sighted in to be
0 at 100
50 yds is +1.7
150 yds is -4.3
200 yds is -12.1
1000 yds is -598.1 that's a whopping 49.83 ft ...just for giggles

the easiest way to describe the 458 socom is its approx. 10% faster than a 45/70 but out of a semi auto AR.. Nice compact package that makes a wonderful hog gun, deer rifle, or as one private contractor working a checkpoint on border between Iraq and Iran told me "a stop anything that's moving that should not be " gun .. 1 to 2 shots takes out any motor not in an armored vehicle

Congrats on your harvest!!
It must be nice to be able to hunt with an AR profile rifle. The only thing we can kill with an AR up here in Canada in "paper targets" :(
My wife is the same too as we both love the super organic meat from our deer!!
Thanks for sharing eh ;)

Greetings and Congradulations !
That is the first Socum deer I remember reading this year. Hit something with a 300 grain caliber 45 boolit at 1500 fps and good things happen. That is a good looking "eater" laying there. Fine looking best friend also.

Congratulations!

I harvested my first ever deer this year with my 223/5.56 AR, using Fusion 62gr SP. Head on, hit left shoulder, made a little turn into the body. Deer ran 30yds and dropped. Done properly, this is a fine rifle.

BTW, I expect next year will be a 300blk cast year :)

I have 223 in a bolt but never thought it would bring them down at 100 yrd without tracking them long ways. I shot many rifles with cast and my favorite is 35 rem I hunt thick woods next my mauser 308 180 cast.
just got this today with 200gr. 35 rem at about 100 yrds90449

Good deer, good cull job as well. I've supported taxidermists all I care to for now so I target culls as well. IMHO a cull deer is a dry doe or a buck that has no potential of becoming a trophy or passing on desirable genetics to the deer herd. A deer that age should be a six-point and somewhat wider to be worth keeping in the gene pool. The "culls" on the lease where I hunt as a guest are often what I consider good deer, just not what a trophy hunter is looking for.
Think I'll go pour another glass of wine and slip into my FR jammies.

Congrats on the shot and using the super evil death gun. Spike bucks not growing into anything worth shooting is an old wives tale. Unless it's still a spike at 2.5+ years of age. I have no issue with someone who shoots one, if all they want is the meat. Just shooting them as 'culls' because you don't think they will get any bigger just doesn't make much since. However, I know the original poster didn't do this and I'm definitely not knocking him. I've heard people say "Dry doe", how they heck do you determine that?

I do feel for you.. Reason I started using AR's was to educate the public that AR's can be used for hunting.. the More places I can post pics of my kills with the gun the better..
got to get the idea of AR's uses through those thick skulls

Nice shootin. How do u like the SOCOM? I've been thinking about one in one of the 30 cals, whisper, blackout, or Remington.

Smoke4320

I have 3 ARs
6.5 grendel for long range
300 blackout for loads of fun and up to 200 yds hunting
and 458 socom when i just want to go big
like them all and they all can do different things
If i was limited to only 1 it would be the 300 because you can go from 110 to 247 grain bullets
and functions 100% with a suppressor
plus ammo is easy to make

why its easy just go up and ask the doe if she is thirsty;)
I have heard that as well about spike buck but then I have also heard that is all they will grow for the first rack
makes no matter I hunt for meat as well
congrats to the op and fat-beeman for their fine harvest
