Hello all,
For those of you who have the RCBS .458 300 gr or 405 gr gas check molds what diameter do they drop and with approximately what alloy? Shopping for a mold to cast bullets for a friend with a new Marlin 1895 in 45-70 and hoping for .460" or close. How do you like the RCBS bullets? I am very impressed with the couple of other RCBS molds I own and considering one for the 45-70.
Thanks for the help,
Rick

I have a few of these sized with Gas check installed. They measure .4585 using wheel weight alloy (13 bhn). I like using softer20/1 alloy best because alloy mushrooms nicely and gas check will stay on better. I recovered both type bullets fired into clay bank using the WW and 20/1 and only the 20/1 had gas check still attached. I would pick the 300 grain bullet over the 400 grain. These were fired in my 1996 vintage Marlin 1895 Guide Gun with ballard cut rifling. I used 5744 powder and group size was around 1 1/2" @ 100 yrds with both alloy types.

My standard 1895 (1995 vintage) with longer barrel has micro-groove rifling. I never tried lead bullets in this gun.
