My usual powder in the 405 is AA 5744. I'd like to work up an 860 load when it warms up. Thought I'd check if any of the friends here have tried the real slow ones in the 405.
Merry Christmas

I just ordered a Win 1895 in 405(Gunbroker)
Do you have any favorite loads for the 405?
I've got brass, primers and some commercial cast located. I'm not sure what I'm going to go with for a bullet mold yet, maybe get something from Accurate.

Lar45. I had Tom at accurate make me up a custom. He now lists it in his catalog as a 41-330 C . I've been shooting it in a new style 1885 High wall. I wanted a long nose rider design I could seat to the lands with no crimp grove and 2 groves for your Great BAC. I couldn't be happier. I think you would like his 41-325 B in your 1895. AA5744 shoots best for me with AA2230 a close second. I'll check my notes in the shop and post them for you tomorrow.

Shadygrady I called Western powders. They have no data for the 405 with 8700. Not a problem. I can work up a load. It may be interesting to work up a load with 860. I may kick it in the pants with a wee bit of 4198.

I traded for a Moroku 1895 in 450 WCF about two years ago and it is now my favorite rifle. I became obsessed with shooting a 400 grain bullet in it. I was told on a couple of other forums that in an 1895 it couldn't be done. That was all the encouragement I needed. I read a post here by Bullshop about a 410 Grain cast that he makes for his 405 single shot. I bought a box of 50 of them from him and have been working up a load. The only powders I have available are Benchmark, IMR 4064 and H4895.

I started with the lowest load listed in Hodgdon's data and have worked up to 47.5 grains of H4895 for 1967 fps average. The accuracy isn't great but there is hope. I may try the 4064 again but I'm almost out and don't have much hope of finding more anytime soon.

I'm going to have a 405 grain mold made for wheel weight alloy so if i have to add a little tin I'll still get a 400 grain boolit. I will tweak Bullshop's design a bit since his is designed for a single shot. I will do a boar rider like yours but with a shorter nose so it will fit the magazine.

Our favorite hunting bullet in the 405 is the RCBS 350 grain sized to .414. Seems to be a better killer than 310 gas check flat point I started with although we have killed lots of bison cows and a very good bull elk withthe little slug. 4895 is good as is 3031 for full power loads.
The very slow powders will be about like blackpowderin a straight case.
I reccomend Carnuba Red bullet lube if you know where to get some....................

Lar45 My 1885 Slugs .412. I size the 330 gr. accurate molds 41-330 C to .413
The only loads I joted down in the log are:

30.5 gr. AA5744 50 yd. Ave group size 1.0"
31.3 gr. IMR 4198 " " 1.1"
22.0 gr 2400 " " 1.3"

All loads are plenty safe in my rifle. The 5744 load has been the most consistent for me so far. Velocity runs about 1800
