I am not a gunsmith or machinist. I need a micrometer only for slugging bores and measuring boolits. I know everyone says Starrett or Miyo (sp?), but I'm not real flush ATM. Basically, mom tells my wife "get him something for Christmas that I can put under the tree $50 or less". I know this is a far cry from the best, but would it function for my limited needs?

You can get a nice used one on Ebay.

Most of the machinists tools sold by the reloading equipment manufacturers are rebadged and price-inflated products of companies that make machinists tools.

I'm going to put a name out there for new stuff: Fowler. Not the very best, but better than it needs to be.

Here's a pretty good video on how to calibrate a mechanical digital Mic. It's a little overkill but it is good information none the less.

Indeed, Fowler is where I landed. A tool I make a living with, I spend good money for. A tool to support my hobby not so much, but I do want what works reliably and consistently, Fowler fills the bill perfectly.

I bought this set and it's worked fine for me for reloading.

Good to hear. I was fortunate enough to inherit some Sterritt stuff. There'd be no way I'd spend that kind of money on my hobby.

I bought 0-1" through 5-6" Starretts to use at home and in my classes at the local community college, but used my Lyman 0-1" mic and Lyman 6" dial micrometer for most of my class work. They measured closer than I was able to keep my work, so were good enough for what I was doing, and pretty much expendable if misfortune befell them (but it never did! :D)

I have a Starret 0-1 mike and a Harbor Freight digital calliper. I check them one against the other and find little if any difference most of the time.

I have good mic's and OK mic's. I did get a digital set from Harbor Freight, the Chi Com variety, and they work really well. Repeatable and accurate. Cheap, too. Mike
