My Marlin 1895 is crying out for a load using Unique instead of AA-5744. I get good accuracy out of the 5744, but since I've been playing with Unique in 30-30, 35-55, 7.62X54R, etc., I am convinced Unique will do the trick with more consistent accuracy.
My current molds are Lee 340 grain plain base, Lee 405 grain plain base, Lee 405 grain hollow base, RCBS 45-405-FN, and RD TLC 460-420-FN. Anyone got any pet loads pushing any of these boolits at 1200-1400 fps? They will probably also be used in a Handi-Rifle which shoots cast as well as the Marlin.

:Fire:

Happy Thanksgiving day to all!!!!!!

Lyman cast 457122 330gr HP
14-17.5gr @ 1240-1410fps

Lyman cast 457193 405gr FN
13-16.5gr @ 1110-1260fps

I have a Marlin 1895 also. My notes indicate I've tried Unique with the Lee 405 FP, which weighs 415 grains from my mold, and the Lee 340 grain boolit. With the former, 10 grains gave me 945 fps and the latter, 11 grains gave me 1110 fps. I don't know how accurate they were because there's nothing mentioned, so I'm thinking it was only so-so. Good luck and if you do come across a magic Unique load, let us know.

Range work today before the rain. Tried Lee 405 gr hollow base [388 gr of my alloy], RCBS 45-450-FN [423 gr of my alloy, Gator checks], RD TLC460-425-RF [420 gr my alloy, Gator checks]. Lee and RCBS sized to .458", RD sized at .460". All with my own lube concoction, over 15 gr. Unique and WLR primer and shot in NEF Handi-Rifle 45/70 at 100 yards. 6 rounds per loaded, 1 for fouling and 5 for group. Lee boolit group 3", RCBS and RD groups of 8". 15 minutes between groups cooling time. Air temp 47 degrees. This is not a very thorough test, but will follow up on the Lee boolit with more tests. Just a note to follow up on my quest.

A good load for me, and rather quiet for a .45-70, is 16 grains Unique (30,000+ capable actions only) and a 405 grain plainbase bullet. Accurate, mild recoil, deer capable. I use the Lee 405 FN that casts to .461" since I specified an "oversize" mould direct from Lee. Used in my Microgroove Marlin 1895, and the load shoots little groups very economically. Average velocity is 1260 fps.

No filler needed. You can substitute a GC bullet, I suppose, but it's just extra expense to no benefit.
