I killed this doe this evening with my old Savage 99EG in .300 Savage continuing my trend of hunting deer with cast in vintage Savage rifles. This one is a 1950 vintage if I recall which may make it the oldest rifle I've used on one (my old Marlin .35 is about the same age, I'll have to check). Load was the NOE group buy clone of the 311041 cast of 50/50 plus 2% tin and air cooled, 28 grains of IMR4895 and a small bit of dacron filler. The rifle shoots this bullet well, but I think I'm gonna go with something else as my Model 1920 doesn't like it and I want one load if I can.
The bullet broke up her left shoulder and went straight in (I thought she was facing me almost head on, apparently she was quartering somewhat) center punched her heart and made a mess of things. It didn't exit, but I didn't find it either. The shot was maybe 30-40 yards and she ran probably a little farther than that. I watched her fall so no tracking. It was real cold today and we had our first real snow. I have the rifle sprayed all down with oil right now to try to head off any rust problems. About the only thing I'm not pleased with this load is that there was no blood trail at all, none, and hardly any came out of the entry hole at all. This is the same as the buck I shot with the ranchdog bullet last year (coincidentally, from the same tree and standing very close to the same spot). That bullet did exit, but with a very small exit hole.
