I have a Hastings 870 barrel, 24" long, but with iron sights. I have a 2.5X Weaver on my shotgun. I live in a shotgun only zone, so for deer I use this barrel exclusively. It's pretty accurate. Sighting in at 75 yds, I could put 3 slugs into a 3" circle (when my eyesight was better) I eventually drifted over to sabot slugs, and their performance on game was amazing, but too costly in my book, so I went back to shooting the regular lead slugs. Most of my shots are between 30-60 yds, and are one shot kills. Have used the Hastings barrel for about 10-12 yrs. My old Remington 20" improved cylinder barrel with open sights would give me 2-3/4" groups at 50 yds all day, with either Remington or Winchester slugs, provided I did my part. I switched over to the Hastings barrel, because I wanted to extend my range.

pokeing around the internet I've seen new in the ballpark of 350.00 used you really never know what you get unless you know its history

I bet you can get a nice used 870 for around $300 with a slug barrel, the whole gun. I got a Mossberg 500 with a rifled barrel in excellent condition for $237.00 on Gun Broker.

Thanks,
I'm looking for the best possible accuracy, so you think the 870 w slug barrel or the Mossberg will out perform the Hastings barrel?
I have ordered a Lyman 1-Cavity 12 Gauge Shotshell Sabot Slug Bullet Mould, 525 Grain.
I have reloaded for the last 35+ years and have a tendency to get anal about accuracy.

I bought my Hastings barrel on fleabay. I believe I won it for 160.00. It was exactly as described. Extremely good condition.
I have put five .678 round balls in 2" at 50 yards, with this barrel.
I also cast and load the Lyman Sabot Slug. Although I haven't stoked them to maximum velocities (didn't have slower powder) the loads that I did shoot with Alliant Herco would stay in 2" at 50 yards.
Hastings has a reputation of being one of, if not the best rifled barrel for shotguns.
I would not hesitate to buy another Hastings barrel. Be patient, and keep an eye on fleabay.
Regards
Jack

I bought a Mossberg 500 with a slug barrel about 3 years ago for $220 at Gander Mountain. I had not planned on getting a slug barreled shotgun when I started browsing their inventory but the gun looked like new and the price seemed very good. Now, I am really glad I purchased it as I have decided to experiment with the Lyman slug for self-defense. Bargains are out there if you are patient.

(Sick of paying $1/shot for factory so the Lyman mold will pay for itself very quickly)
